Just bought a VMAX last weekend, I plan on start using synthetic at the 1k mark. What oil are you VMAX guys using? I was thinking of Amsoil or Redline, not really a fan of Royal Purple.

I've decided I can't justify the cost of the ~$7 a quart oils so I'm sticking with Mobile 1 in my 100K+ engine. :)

ive decided that i cant justify the cost of even $5 a quart so i just use castrol convential oil and change it religiously

I'm getting Mobile 1 @ $19.98/5qt. jug at the Wally World and I change it at around 5000 to 6000 miles. I think the conventional stuff is just fine too as long as you are changing it at reasonable intervals like you said.

I've decided to go with Redline 5W-30. I plan on keeping the truck for a long time. Nothing too good for my pick up!

Dont put redline in. It will void the warranty if the motor has problems. I use Royal Purple every 3000 miles.

why do you say this?

Are you saying Redline will void warranty and Royal Purple will not? I work for a dealership and brand of oil never comes into question for engine warranty work. Granted I dont work for GM.

I just got my 07 Vortec Max and only have 800 miles on it. Plan on using Mobil 1 eventually after a decent break-in.

Damn good link, I didnt see much about Redline oil. I know Redline oil is still a group IV oil so that is whats important to me. I did some research last night and I'm gonna switch to Amsoil after I used the Redline. Amsoil has some tests published on their site and Redline is the only one that came close. Now I didnt read all the tests and it was for a different weight oil. I'm sure I'm making a bigger deal that it really is, I dont plan on racing my truck or towing heavy loads. I just want the best oil I can get.

I can't rember the exact thing about redline its somthing like GM has not approved it and it does not meet consistancey standards. I will try and find it. It might have changed and I could ver well be wrong. Whats wrong with royal purple.

didn't see anything negative about rp in that thread...unless i'm missing something.

been running rp for 2+ years now, started at 94K on the hoe, got around 160 at the moment, no probs

RP has something in graphit or something in it that will settle and cause deposites or something like that. Not quite sure, RP is supposed to be great for racing applications but not so great for daily drivers. I'm sure they (whoever they are) are really nit picking the oils. However RP is supposed to be really bad for deisel engines, again, I cant recall exactly why.

Buddy of ours has a Cummins and he used Amsoil in it and it smoked really bad... Finally changed back to rotella T or something and it cleared right up....

My truck has had Castrol GTX 5w-30 for 100k miles when my mom drove it. Ive used Mobil 1 5w30 in it since then and now has 165k miles. No problems...
I vented the Passenger side Valve cover and have a Hobb Switch connected to the TB. No more bad oil consumption..

Castrol GTX and Wix Filter is about $18
Mobil 1 and Wix Filter is about $34

Ive used it for this long..... wonder how much longer it will last?

Do you guys use the Oil Change Light or every 3,4,5 or 6k miles??

I changed my oil at 500 miles, but still used conventional. I have heard that the engine breaks in better with conventional oil in it. I was going to wait until the DIC said it was time to change but I got impatient and changed over to synthetic at about 4,000 miles. I have been using the Mobil1 5W30. I have used that oil in many vehicles I have owned. I really like the oil.

Anyway, I try to wait until the DIC says its time to change the oil, but I am always too impatient. I change it a little early every time. The DIC is calibrated for conventional oil, so you are still changing it before it needs it if you use synthetic. Synthetic does not break down as easily and withstands heat better.

I had an 83 Chevy truck with the original 305 in it that still ran like new. I always put Mobil1 synthetic in it, and the previous owner did as well. I think that truck will run forever. It didn't even use any oil between changes.

Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w-30 every 3k here. I know this oil can go 5-6k but I was always taught the 3k rule so im gonna stick with it.

German Castrol Syntec 0/30.
My 02 z28 had a slight piston slap on cold starts with all other synthetics. I have never heard it since using this oil and for the $ it’s hard to beat. GM also recommends this in colder climates so they can’t try any BS if something goes wrong that requires warranty work.
