Default Towing in Overdrive

I've been reading a lot about this lately and i'm wondering what you all think. Do you tow in overdrive or do you drop it down into 3rd? I was under the impression that you didn't want to tow in OD because the TC will unlock a lot causing the trans to heat up too much. But, what if you're trans stays locked up and you have an oversized trans cooler while towing in OD? Also, is this the same rational as to why a high stall TC is NOT recommended for towing?

Having re-geared and FI the computer rarely drops out of OD when i'm towing, even up steep grades. I don't even use the tow/haul function. Is this something i need to worry about or am i fine doing what i've been doing?

Well it's probably not doing wonders for your transmission. I would use the tow/haul button but keep it in D

I tow in OD with the tow haul on but I have diesel with the allison trans. You guys with 4l60e's if you are on flat land like me I see no problem towing in OD with tow/haul but if you start to get into the hills I think 3rd would be better.

Hey, the thing is, D is 3rd with OD. the 4l60e is a 3 speed transmission with overdrive if I remember correctly. Does the tow/haul button keep you out of lock up or does it keep you out of OD? If it keeps your out of OD then 3 and D+tow/haul would be the same thing. Tow/haul also ups your shift line pressures.

I tow in 3 with tow/haul unless it is particularly flat. This for a roughly 5,000lb trailer. If I go to D even with tow/haul, the tranny temps start to get HOT. In 3 it never get above 200 and that's with the stock trans cooler. Since my FLT trans, I no longer use tow haul (too much line pressure/hard shift) but still tow in 3 unless very flat.

I've never seen my trans temp go over 200 and it rarely kicks down unless i'm climbing a very steep grade for a long period of time. In a couple of weeks when i get my FLT level 5 i'll be able to really put it to a test.

I guess for now i'll keep it in OD unless i'm noticebly dropping out of OD or my TC is unlocking and creating a lot of heat.
