Truck is 8 weeks old and already ripping it apart. RCSB can't get body color handles and can't order upper level mirrors (fold/adjust/heat/signal/dimming/memory) and I was looking at adding those but gets complicated fast (databus plus programming, need different switches which require top level door panels and additional harness, etc)
Anyway, best part of that setup is the signal light. I knew you could order the camper mirrors that come with signal light so was hoping all reg cabs would get the same harness and yup there it is. Whew. Bought some stuff off e-bay over the last few weeks and installed pass side door handle and mirror glass today. Some notes if you are interested:
Door panel is pretty easy. Take off trim panels for access to bolts. One under door interior handle pop off from front (there is a slot inside the panel there). Grab handle cover pops off (start at bottom, there is a slot there), two bolts hold grab handle on, then can pull up on switch panel and unplug.Remove triangle piece by mirror (3 clips, just pop off) Inside door handle can stay on, it is attached to door panel but you will have to support panel and unclip from backside once panel is off, it uses a ball end cable to engage mechanism and cable has two tangs you depress to release. Door lock button has small square tab, pop that off and it all falls apart.
Use tape to protect paint, slide tool under lower door edge front corner (worked for me) and pop off clips..they are pretty easy...once corner was off, pulled the rest just using hands (less chance of damage).
The water/sound barrier is clipped ot the door panel and then also glued to the door. Pretty tough to avoid damage as the door panel comes off...generally the clip area lets go. Carefully peel off the door and can re-use the sealant if you take your time.
Outside door handle is pretty obvious once you have access. Two bolts. Aft bolt access by removing round rubber plug in door. Rod stays with handle, unclip from latch assy and remove with rod. Clip is plastic, folds over in half around threaded rod and has threads so holds threaded rod and makes it all very easy. Transfer rod and install new handle.
Mirror harness >>from body<< has the blue/white (+) and black (-) wires needed for the signal. Stock >>from mirror<< harness does not have those wires in connector block. I used the harness wires/glass from an uplevel mirror so it all looks stock. The glass is a bugger to get off the motor, basically it slides up and off the tangs, but I ended up removing the mirror, removing the colored cap and the lower outboard cap to get access to it so I could pry a bit on the tabs..finally popped off. New one goes on tough too.
Put it all together. Body color door handles and signal light in the mirror...it even blinks with the key fob lock and unlock functions. Awesome.
I got my glass by buying complete mirrors off e-bay, it worked out cheaper than just buying the glass from GM, but I got lucky. I do want to try and adapt the folding mirrors someday and add the upper level panels (already have), that will require switchplate mods (extra window switches :jest:), new harness, programming etc. Guy could make the folding manual and the puddle light off the latch assy door open signal but for now I'm happy with this. Need to do some more research....gotta save something for later..... :)
Note in first picture the side airbag module near aft end of door..also the ball end cable for the interior door handle mechanism is right above it too. As always be careful and anything you do is at your own risk!! :judge:

I wouldn't do that to you guys!!! :jest:
And on the 06, whole different animal but couldn't a guy order the uplevel mirrors on the RCSB? If so, wiring should be there already, or at least easy to add...
Oh yeah, forgot to mention Muth sells kits to add signal mirrors to just about anything. They are also an OEM supplier so good stuff, but again sometimes e-bay is your friend (ie for less than the price of the kits I got complete mirror assy's that I may or may not use one day, plus all the parts needed and/or spare parts). Yeah 200mph would be neat!! :D Color shows everything but thats ok....20 years ago age 17 my very first truck was a dark blue 70 GMC. Loved that thing...350, 4.10's, used to race new mustangs and camaros downtown, thing would launch HARD, course couldn't get over about 80 mph!!LOL Full circle I guess. Didn't know much at 17 but the truck made me popular... ;) yes its a 3/4 ton but people never noticed. Brute tough too.
Did the drivers side today. It went much smoother, didn't mess with the interior handle, the mirror caps came off easily, as did the old mirror glass connectors (pass side were brutal!) Didn't have to remove mirror from truck....just pulled the new wires through the mirror housing with some lockwire. Left the sound/moisture barrier attached somewhere at all times, so went fast. Less than 2 hours start to finish, and not rushing, no point damaging anything.
Drivers side has door lock of course. Held on with one wire spring clip, found it easiest to pop clip off before handle came out, then took the rod off the lock assy once handle out (tough to get at when in door but can work through door handle opening). Clip back together on handle install.
Few more pics attached to maybe help a few guys out. As usual the really interesting stuff (disconnecting latch from panel) no pics as hands were full...note the two hooks at bottom of door panel that sit in slots in door, very helpful when assembling as takes the weight while you line up. Also note interior door handle mechanism and location of attach clips. You can really see the latch ball end cable in the one shot of the barrier. Also one closeup of panel under interior handle. Note the slot at front..these things are tight so if you come in from the top it will keep snapping back into place.
Oh yeah, and last but not least my GMC carpet floor mats...make sure you order for REG CAB, they are NOT the same as others. P/N 19155774 for Dark Titanium, even come with anchors and are molded to catch debri.
I'm done now!! :D

I need a full size (towing, hauling) but also don't need more than a reg cab. No point hauling around an extra 1000 lbs I don't need or use.

Just an heads up here, GM just issued a tech bulletin on swapping mirrors. They mentioned that "some vehicles with the DL8 mirrors may NOT have the turn signal wiring installed" and goes on to say the turn signals in the camper mirrors won't work if installed. All Reg cabs get the DL8 mirrors I believe (pwr adjust and heated). Doc #1993318
Just thought I would mention it, if anyone is interested in doing the signal mirror mod you would be wise to pull the grab handles out, lift out the switch panel and make sure you have the signal light wiring on your door harness before proceeding and/or buying parts, otherwise could become a really big project.
My truck has the trailering package and that might affect what is and isn't included.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the mirror caps and door handles? I am wanting/considering doing these mods too to mine, but can't find them. I guess I could always buy from the dealer but thats got to get expensive fast.

FWIW...I wouldnt buy a reg cab for towing. dont ask me why but the ex cabs tow waaaay better. Maybe its from the longer wheel base.

Mirror caps from GM, they are cheap, like 55.00 a set of two. Door handles off E-bay. Usually about 50-60.00/set.

I agree, I don't tow much though...maybe once a year and not very far, just somebodies car in town where speeds are fairly low and no crosswind kind of situations. I am however always moving people to new houses, engines, trannies, diffs, etc so full size truck is very handy. If friends come over and we want to go out we take the car.
The truck is handy, its also my daily driver. Good view of the road/traffic and I like the way they drive, yet I can also maneuver around pretty good in a RCSB. Its also sporty looking and uses less fuel (I'm averaging about 20 US MPG in town and about 23 US MPG on highway)...so its the perfect fit for me.

I have not actually connected it but when I installed the signal mirror glass, I had the auto dimming wiring there as well. If I had been thinking a bit I would have run it out the door wiring harness boot to the cab, but I left it inside the door.
The reason I did that was I did not have the terminals yet (and wasn't sure I would even hook it up), and its my daily driver so can't leave it apart until things show up. I do now, and the cab wiring for the auto dimming glass runs right out to the backside of drivers side fuseblock. Just need to install the terminals onto the wiring (which means pull door panel again) and then put those terminals into one of the connectors you see when you pop that instrument panel fuseblock cover off (connector X4, pins A5 and B7). Hopefully this summer. I see no reason why it would not work, I have traced the wires in the diagrams right to the fuseblock.
Maybe I will take some pics and do a write-up on it but I am pretty busy these days and not sure how many guys are really interested anyway. I'll update thread once its done.

When you pop the panel off, the X4 connector is the uppermost forward one (if you look at sticker on the cover inside face it will say "LT Door"). Lift the lever on connector and it comes right out.
The receptacle in fuseblock has A7 and B7 molded right into it on one end, and you just count down to see where the wires need to go. B7 will be the gray wire from the mirror glass, and A5 will be the pink wire from the mirror glass. On my truck these slots on the connector are empty so just need terminals put in and connected to glass and thats it.
Wish I had an extra mirror here, could just connect it and see if it works before ripping everything apart, might be an idea if you have the mirror off. Let us know how it goes.
BTW your 60 foot is way better than mine, is that stock, tuned, modded, on a track...??
