Default stock converter characteristics

I have a 02 1500 4WD. Stock truck, and, except when i was 16, every car that Ive had was a 6 speed f body.
(or a ford escort...the red rocket )

what does the stock converter do different than an aftermarket one?

What is a 'lockup' converter? when and why does it lock? can you feel the difference when driving? is the stock converter a lock up?

I ask because I feel like my converter is slipping, but I really have nothing to base that on, except sometimes, when I hit the gas, the rpms will climb, truck will roll, but not like it should be, I hit the brakes, THEN it feels like the tranny hits 1st gear, and I drive away without an issue. Thats only happened 2 or three times, but I still want to know what is happeneing.
