I just swapped tranny pans last night, from a deep back to stock. Also did exhaust - when I finished the exhaust I got excited and started the truck up without refilling the trans. Ran it for probably a minute or so, put it in reverse, didn't move, then I remembered and shut it down and filled the trans.

I'm getting a whining noise now that moves with engine RPM. Any ideas? I wonder if I need to crack the pan open again and check to see if the filter is on all the way? The shifts are not as firm as they were before either. It's a 4L80E.

I can't imagine that I messed something up, but I dunno what's going on now.

 

That sucks Chris. Go to autozone and see if they have a tranns pressure gauge you can borrow and see what kind of pressure it's putting out. If it low, if you swap the pump now, before you drive it much, and the clutches might still be ok, but I know it still a lot of work.

I cant see how it would in that short of time. And being that you didnt drive it, you just put it in reverse. I broke a trans line on the highway and drained every drop out of my 60e. I just filled it and started it up. But i do remember that it did make a bad noise for a few minutes till the pump reprimed itself.

 

Jeez that would have to be bad luck. Eventhough you drained the pan there was still a lot of fluid in the transmission. I can't see where running it for a minute would hurt the trans. I think I would let it idle for a while.

I've been driving it, has about 30 miles on it since that happened. It makes noise and the shifts are a little softer than they used to be. I'm going to get a pressure check kit tonight and drop the pan again and make sure the filter is seated all the way. I'm hoping for the best. I can deal with a little whine as long as the pressures look ok.

 

The whine will sound like you have a radix on the 408.

I dropped the pan again tonight, changed the filter, put everything back together and it'd driving fine again. I dunno what the problem was, but it's gone now
