Ok, so I've hinted a little about this in other threads, so I thought since we have this section now I would start my thread. A little history on the truck.

My dad bought this truck brand new 9 day before him and my mom got married in 1972. So it truly is a one owner. This was the second truck he had in the 2 months. The first was also a brand new 71 that he had for 2 weeks and hit a spot of black ice and slide head on into a tree. He hit so hard and just off center that it tweaked every panel on the truck except the tall gate. :eek2: Needless to say they totaled it and he had to get another new truck.

So this is what he got. This truck has been his daily driver pretty much since the day he brought it home. It has some where north of 200K miles on it ( did have to replace the timing chain;) )and was still running strong until a couple months ago when I started this project.

So here is the plan for the truck. We bought a 5.3/4L60E from a 04 Tahoe 4x4 with 30K something miles on it. He has aways wanted something with a turbo on it, so I'm going to make a custom front mount MP T70 turbo and intercooler. The truck is 4x4 and we are keeping it that way so we had to buy a out-put shaft and adapter from Advanced Adapter to mate it to the 205 transfer case. That part is still in boxes, as I'm doing the suspension first.

Going to be a great project! I learned to drive in a 72 like that. Once we find the right one, my dad and i are going to build one (70-72). I look forward to seeing your progress.

OK, there's the other fun part. He wants this thing to keep the stock ride height, and ride like a caddy. With the stock leafs all the way around it rides like a tank. It was so rough my mom won't ride in it any more . He has always loved the idea of air ride suspension, so bags it is. We are using universal 4 link kits and 2800# Contec bags on both the front and the rear from Suicide Doors and one of there air management systems. Its complete with air tank, compressor, gauges, and switch box.

So far, here is where I'm at. I've got the rear suspension pretty much done and welded out. Still a few little thing to do, but close and I'm just starting on the front. Its going to be the hardest, trying to make everything fit around the steering and diff and all that.

Thats going to be a nice ride when you get finished. HP output is going to triple from where it was with the old motor.

Thats really cool that your dad hung on to that truck all these years. I wish I had a few of the old trucks that went through my family in the past.

Haven't got to far lately, got all the old suspension off the front and started mocking up the 4 link, and then my buddy got fired, so I had to go down to CO and get his 95, Procharged, Firebird basket case out of the shop where he worked and bring it to my house and now I'm in OR for Xmass till the first of the year :(. When I get home, I will get some updated pics for you guys :).

Ok, so I'm finally been able to get some work on this and here is where I'm at. Got the front 4-link all fitted and tacked into place as well as the drivers side bucket for the bag. It looks a little tight in the pics, but there is a good 3/4 inch all the way around it and moving the suspension though the travel, it shouldn't ever come close to rubbing. Also got the panhard bar in place, but going to have to move it a little, forgot to leave enough from for the lower shock mount on the drivers side. Looks pretty good so far. Here is some pics :)

Hey thats going to a hell of a truck. Just wondering if you know the Part # of the of the shaft & adapter from advance adapter. By theway me and a friend did a custom twin turbo on a ls1 in a 69 camaro and it put 600 rwhp.So you should put some ponies down too. I'm building 72 k-5 any input will help. Thank you

I don't have the PN for the adapter off hand, i will see if I can find them.

Got the thing sitting on air now, The tank and valves aren't plumed yet, but for the most part the suspension is mostly built. Here are some more pics.

Been a while, so I though I'd give ya an update. The suspension is mostly done, just need a few touch up welds when I pull it back apart for paint. I got the motor, trans and transfer-case mock up. The cross member was a lot bigger PIA then I though it was going to be. I though I would be able to just drop the motor in, weld some tabs to it and bolt the stock 5.3 mounts to them, but nothing even came close for that to work. I ended up building some adapters to bolt some stock replacement 72 mount to the 5.3 and then had to remake the stock cross member, lowering and widening it for every thing to fit. I was a pain, but every thing clears now even with all the air out of the bags.

Hell yeah! I love the old 67-72's. Especially the 4wd's. You don't see many of them running around. My dad and I built a 68 rcsb 2wd to pull my old Nova hot rod to the track. Just put together a bunch of junk and it ran damn good. It had a 307, saginaw 4 speed, & 4.10 rear. I bet you wouldn't have thought i'd build something with a stick would you? :drive: The Nova had a pro-shifted Muncie in it as well. :)
Keep it up man. That thing's a 3/4 ton with a 14 bolt isn't it?

BTW- you didn't happen to sneak me out a Jerico from the NASCAR shop did you? ;)

HAha, we didn't use Jerico's, we used Tex ;) Pretty much the same though :drive: Kinda noisy, but way fun to drive, and if I'd been able to "sneak" one out, it would have been for me :D

The truck is a 3/4 ton, but I believe the rear end is actual an Eaten 1ton dually rear end. Its got a 10 bolt round cover and is FF  and its 4 inches narrower track then the front. I think it's one of those ran out of parts on the assembly line thing. Cuz that's what it came from the dealer with. My dad went to put new bearings in it one time and bought the 3/4 ton bearings for it and they fell right though the hubs  to small ;). It dosen't have a posi or locker, but I guess thats what the 4x4 is for :jest:

TurboGibbs

I dunno what rear that is. More pics would be interesting. I've never seen anything like it in an old chevy truck. The 14 bolts definately different.

kbracing96
02-24-2007, 01:48 PM
From what I have found I think it is an Eaton HO72 1 ton. They made a HO52 (3/4 ton) and HO72 (1 ton), the only differences is the brake hubs are bigger and narrower on the 72. Its got removable front pumpkin, like a 9" ford. Apparently they haven't made or used them since 72, so parts can be a little hard to come by, but it's supposed to be a stout rearend, 12.?? ring gear. It does have 4.11 gears though. Here's a couple pics

I temporally hooked up the switch box for the bags to see how they work and WOW, I'm gona have to put some flow restriction in them or something, It goes from completely flat to hitting the chain limiters in about a sec, :jest: You can't hit the button fast enough to get it right where you want them,

I did use the 3/8 valves instead of 1/2 thinking it would be slower, but its still pretty fast. Probable should have just ran 1 line for the rear 2 valves and 1 for the front instead of a line for each. I'm gona wait till I get it all back to gather and the bed on it and see how fast and abrupt it is and then see about some flow restrictors. They make adjustable one's but there $25 a pop and I'd need 4, so I'll probable just get some couplers and weld them up and drill different size holes in them till I get a fill rate I'm happy with.

Well, got her running today:D and she runs pretty good!. Still got some work to do to be able to drive it (gota put the carpet and seats in it still, but had it idling and revved it for about 30 minutes on the jack stands. Got all the fluids topped off, and the tranny works! I was skerd of it cuz I had to take all the guts out of it to get to 1 little stupid snap ring, so I could change out the out put shaft for the NP205 transfer case. I also put a TG shift kit in it when I did that and anytime I work on a tranny I'm AMAZED when it works after I get done

I have a couple small problems like a leak in the Vband coupler in the cross over pipe, but the problem that has me most confused is that the PCM won't turn on the fuel pump relay. The pin out diagram I have for it shows that pin 9 (grn w/white strip) on the C2 green conector is the primary fuel pump relay control, that I connected to the ground on the FP relay, and it doesn't work. The only code it's throwing is fuel pump relay control not working (go figure). Any ideas?

2 bar MAF tune is possible. The 5.3 shouldn't exceed the limits of the MAF sensor with a little bit of boost. Anything over 10 psi or so might be questionable, but it should be fine under that.

TURBHOE
11-12-2007, 03:18 PM
ok i ask because when you go 2bar with hptuners i'mm 99% sure it turns off the maf.

thunder550
11-12-2007, 03:30 PM
The MAP sensor and the MAF sensor are not interrelated. Most people ditch the MAF and go with a speed density tune when they go up to a 2 bar MAP, but it's not necessary. The thing that "turns off" the MAF is either disconnecting it or setting the MAF fail frequency really low. You can always run MAP alone, MAF alone, or a combination of the two regardless of what type of MAP sensor is used.

Despite all of this, Kyle may just be using the MAF sensor for the embedded IAT sensor. Who knows, he's a crazy guy :judge:

TURBHOE
11-12-2007, 03:38 PM
yeah i went and did alittle searching over there. i guess most people just turn it off. now what about the whole thing where they say the maf takes over at 4000rpm. doe sit only take over till it gets maxed out? sorry not trying to jack the thread just wondering.

kbracing96 GREAT job. looks sweat.

thunder550
11-12-2007, 04:04 PM
There's a setting in the tune that identifies where the MAF takes over exclusively. From the factory it's 4000 RPM, but it's changeable. If the tune is set to run MAF only above a certain RPM and you exceed the limits of the MAF, the engine will not continue to compensate for increasing airflow. That = :bomb:

Most who are making enough power to max out the MAF go SD. I'm guessing you can set the tune up to run off the MAF till a certain point then go to VE tables too. Not 100% on that, but the tunes are really flexible so I'm assuming it can be done.

kbracing96
11-12-2007, 04:27 PM
Ya, what Chris said, :jest:. Actually, I'm gonna keep the MAF for now and a 1 bar, cus I can't find the damn 2 bar MAP I bought for this thing almost a year ago, :bang:  But will most likely still leave the MAF on there even after I put the 2 bar on. I have ran my truck both with and with out it and doesn't seem to make much difference to me, seem to compensate a little better with it and changing climates and altitude and since I wont always be around to adjust the tune from time to time I think it will be a better fit for pops. We are only gonna run around 6-8 psi of boost, so it shouldn't be maxing out the MAF.

thunder550
11-12-2007, 04:41 PM

It will have a fairly conservative closed loop enabled tune with COS3 when I get all done with it.

Just curious, where do you have your throttle position set for enabling PE mode? I put mine at 28% all the way down the entire table, which is right about where I start to cross into boost at lower RPM. Higher RPM requires more throttle, but I rarely run in vacuum at high RPM so I didn't think it was a big deal.

In the COS tunes, I don't use PE (it's set at 14.68 all the way down), I just use B3647 so any time it goes into boost, it richens up.

How did you get it to work? I'm using COS3 and whenever I go into CL it disables that table for me. I had to use the PE table to do my OL fueling.

You actually only use a semi closed loop. You don't re-enable closed loop in the tune, you just put 14.68 in most of the B3647 table and it will use short term fuel trims to keep it at 14.68, then any time you get into a cell not commanding 14.68, like in the 80-100 kPa column, it goes into full open loop and fuels to what ever that cell is commanding.

thunder550

Oh yeah, that's right. I actually put mine back into full closed loop. That's why I lost the commanded AFR table. Makes sense.

Up DATE TIME!!!

Ok guys, FINALLY got to drive the beast :D. and man she runs GOOD! Only running 5psi right now, and a VERY conservative tune till I have time to dial it in. I need to do some more work on the front steering though, has some really bad bump steer, so I think I'm gona have to put cross over steering on it. It's riding pretty rough too, but I think the box will help that, if not, I'm gona put some 1500# sleeve type bags in the back, and they should ride better. I got my seats put in too.

Oh, and their's a video in here for all you video freaks too,

Congratulation on getting it going it's looking good, glad to see some pics and a vid.

I've got a question about your bump steer, did the truck have it before or did you just notice it after the swap? I talked to the guys over at ORD about what I think is bump steer and they didn't think that my tires or lift were big enough to cause the problem and that cross over steering wouldn't fix it. Seems weird to me that I didn't really notice it before my swap but I've got it pretty good now, especially under hard acceleration. Just food for thought, if you find anything out I'd be interested in it.

kbracing96
11-17-2007, 10:11 PM
I never noticed it before, but I'm pretty sure its because of the way my 4 link bars pivot from the back, where the stock springs pivot from the front, like the stock steering arm does. Mine is the worst then I hit a decent bump, it cut right pretty significantly, not to mention I took the steering stabilizer off and haven't put it back on yet. Had a server case of the death wobble the other night that scared the crap out of me . Got a new heavy duty one ordered now.

I think I'm gonna do my cross over steering a little different. I want to minimize the bump steer as much as possible so I'm going to make the steering rod the same length as my panhard bar and then attach it to the stock tie rod and also put it at the same angle as the panhard bar. (I have to swap the way the panhard bar is mounted now though.) I think if those two are the same length and same angle, then they should travel at the same rate and have no bump strear no mater how much the front goes up or down. I hope it works,

I'm no expert on steering geometry, but I was wondering if your bump steer problems might be related to caster angle? Can't a negative caster angle cause the "death wobble"? Have you tried to set the caster angle on that 4 link yet?

I kept the caster the same as it was with the leafs, about 5.5* positive according to my digital level. It's easy to adjust, just have to lengthen or shorten the lower bars on the 4-link. I have a remain 2wd steering box coming, should be here next week. All ready got the steering rod and other stuff I need. I'm pretty sure this will fix it :). I use to set chassis up on NASCAR race cars for a living, so I think a 4x4 truck shouldn't be to hard,

The truck drive nice, and tracks very well, just don't like the "feel". But that's a problem to fix another day. I'm calling this done for now. Dad can drive it and be happy for a while. :) He said he's going to try and do the body work so, we'll see,. The truck runs VERY strong for only 5 psi, he should be happy :). They are bolted strait to the floor. I did make some big, about 3" around and 1/8 thick washers for the bottom to spread the load in the event of an accident since the seat belts are integrated into the seat.

He said after he drove it for a week, he decided to get on it for the first time so he nailed it from a stop and about half way though the intersection, it hit full boost and he said it broke both rear tires loose and got a little sideways on him :jest:. Surprised him at first, but for only 5 psi of boost, he's in love, May be this summer we will bump it up a little, but he is VERY happy with his baby, and a little proud of his son :D

Very Nice.

Thanks, I've been back home for a few months and been driving the truck quite a bit. I finely got the steering fixed so it drives very nice now. :) The ride is pretty good too, I really like driving it around. I'm thinking it's about time to turn up the boost a little, probable around 7psi and work on the tune. Never really spent much time on it, but it runs pretty good now. One of these days we'll have to get around to the body work and paint, so it looks as good as it runs,

It sets in front of the house and I drive it every couple of days, What more do you want to know? Not going to be starting on the body work for a couple years I think, till my mom and dad decide when they're going to move back to OR.

I haven't been on much, so I'm just now seeing this for the first time. I'd like to have a project like this !

A little update, been driving the truck for a while and it's a lot of fun. Drives nice, rides good and get decent mileage (14-17). Took it to the track yesterday and up here (4800') with a DA of 7500 ft and 80* out, it ran a best of 15.68 at 87mph. Not to bad for tipping the scales at 5100 with me in it and only 5 psi of boost on a conservative everyday tune. I had to run it in 4x4 too, as my first run was in 2wd and just spun and spun (18.20 at 80, lol). Pedaled it 3 times, lol. I shifted it out of 4x4 as soon as it would let me pushing on the stick, which was once it got into 3 gear about the 100 foot mark. Could really tell the 4x4 was sucking up a lot of power too. It was a fun day. :)

Are you going to up the boost? Or just leave it. Also as far as i remember, it pulls alot harder then that haha.

No real plans to make it faster, it's fun to drive and does everything my dads want. He's happy, I'm happy. :) Don't want to have to worry about breaking anything. That's why I only took 50% of the TM out of it. It's just a driver, not a racer,

Part of the reason it's so slow is it still has the stock stall in it which will only let it stall to about 17-1800 rpm which is not enough to build boost on the line, so it leaves with no boost and take a little bit to get it spooled up. It 60's 2.52 dead hooking in 4x4, lol.

If I wanted to make it faster, bumping it to 8-9 psi and loosing up the stall so it could leave with 5-7psi would probable get the 60' down to the sub 2 second area and run 13's pretty easy, which is pretty respectable up here. You loose about .5-.7 of a second up here just because of the elevation.

Where did you get your 4 link kit? And bags? You make the 4 link and bags look easy.

I bought everything for that from SuicideDoors.com. I used there weld-up 4 link kits and made everything else. It was anything but easy,
