I'm a chevy boy and love it. convince me why I should buy an '01 or '02 2500 HO cummins/ 6spd truck.
why buy a dodge over a chevy? why the cummins over the duramax (should be a no-brainer there!)
not being a dick, but really wanna know from the chrysler croud, as to why?

I could probably right you a 20 page essay on why to buy a Cummins over a Duramax, but it will all boil down to being a bias decision..
You're on your own when choosing a truck. I've owned my 99 for 210,000 miles with over 500 rwhp for half those miles with no problems.. My father's 04 DMax has been in and out of the dealership ever since he bought it..
Its all personal experience and preference..

no...... you are being a dick..... buy what the fuck you want... why should anyone convince you of anything....... no one wants to read your mindless bullshit....
Statemenents like this make a great reason to get a Cummins equipped Ram.
LesPaul are all Chevy guys as touchy as you?
Mighty Whitey do some research and let that be your guide.
Good luck with your choice!

Buy the one that you like the best. Really all 3 heavy duty diesel trucks will do the job and do it well, it's just which shell that appeals to you more.
You can't really go by someone elses personal experience with a vehicle. For every guy that's had a bad experience with a Dodge, there's someone else that's had an equally bad experience with a Ford and Chevy. One guy will have a tranny go out in 25K, the next will have one last 300K or more.
Get what you think looks best, that's what I did. ;)

in all honesty NO, I WAS NOT BEING A DICK. I could have been, but wasn't, thank ya very much! :offtopic: end of story.
all I was trying to get from this post was some real world answers from the owners as to why they chose a dodge over a chevy. if none of them gave me any positive aspects of owning a dodge/cummins truck, then why would I want to buy one? equally so for the chevy/duramax croud, if there's no positive answers FROM THE OWNERS, then why would i want to own one?
obviously there's going to be some biased opinions here, that's why I posted a similar topic in the duramax section.
didn't mean to ruffle anyones feathers, but that's the only time the truth may come out.

To be honest, its Live and Learn.... You will probably have to own one first before you find out you like it/dislike it. Every truck is different, even from the same company, even off the same manufacturing line on the same day. You may buy a Dodge because someone told you that Dodge will last a million miles, pull a million pounds, and be a million time more comfortable than a Chevy. But you can also run into the chance of that one truck you buy being a total pile of crap...
Just pucker up, read a magazine, then go buy..

RankRam - not all us Cheby guys are like that. Les must've been having a bad day or something. I asked him not to have anymore. ;)
I agree with these guys about you just gonna have to jump in and buy something. A little research and some test drives will help but, until you own it and use it you just won't know.

Well I was going to buy a new 2001 cummins ho 6speed. i drove it a week but the dealer never could get financing right for me so i bought a chevy z71. I have alot of buddys that have all 3 and they are all about the same. the cummins motor is great. in my opnion those years the interior was a little cheap compaired to the chevy. Before you buy try and see if they have a record of matinance. that will be a big key in buying one. if all the filters were changed at the right time and so on then it should be a good buy. my buddy just got sold his 02 cummins after he put a injector pump on it $1000. he was 15k out of warranty. so be prepaired if something does go wrong on any diesel and it is out of warranty expect pay more for parts.

my biggest factor was that the Cummins is a medium-duty engine in a pickup. the 5.9 is way overbuilt for our use. a while back there were some pictures floating around with comparisons of the internals to the other diesels being used in pickups. to me, it was obvious which engine was the heaviest duty. of course, i got the manual trans because the Dodge auto sucks (IMHO)

Alot of it depends what you want to do with the truck. It is not uncommon to find 500+ hp trucks with over 200k mi still running strong. the cummins is in my opinion the cheapest to get 500+hp from and still have a very street fiendly daily driver. Larger product avaliability, simple to work on yourself. The real power houses are the 12 valve trucks and 2nd gen 24 valve trucks retrofitted with a p-pump (12 valve injection pump). The 3rd gens make lots of power, but are very expensive to work on when it comes to the common rail. Dodge trucks have their problems though. Crappy front ends, weak stock auto trans, 98.5-02 VP44 is problematic but not that bad. Stay away from 98.5-00 and early 01 since they have the dreded 53 block thats prone to crack. All in all search the internet take some test drives learn as much as you can and make an informed decision. I was in the same boat a few years back and I went with the cummins mostly b/c of the fact that the basic engine design hadn't changed much over the years and I knew it was a solid foundation

Wow...going digging I see!! All on opinion. They can all haul the job you need them to haul and can all be modded slightly to produce higher numbers and for relatively cheaper than gas engines can in order to produce the same numbers. As far as serious modding ability I heard cummins is the way to go.

true all 3 can do the job you need to do, and from driving and towing with all 3 (stock) they are pretty evenly matched. They all tow good and drive good. Before I bought a dodge I looked at ford and chevy. Since I wanted big power the cummins seemed to be the way to go for me. I found a wider varity of performance parts, and no I don't mean "chips" I mean hardware, Turbos, cams, heads, injectors, pistons........... You can make any of em go fast just depends on how much $$$ you got. I like my 01.5 even if it did come with a weak lift pump and injection pump from the factory. The VP is a good pump as long as you ditch the lift pump as soon as you get it and go to a pusher pump. But really man its all up to you. buy what you like they can all do the job you need. BTW my opinon on the subject was that the cummins is the cheapest to build.

From personal experience I can tell you that I bought my '02 CTD six speed because I wanted a truck with a straight front axle, a strong motor and a trans that would outlast an auto. Now I admit that I have had some issues with my rig, but they were mostly small stuff or under the warranty. I have had my share of bad luck with this truck, but for the most part that has been from {other people} user error. I have made some improvements and Love my truck. I would own another if I had to replace it.
That said, watch lift pump issues and if you have the coin, get a FASS system and a gauge. If you get a NV5600, fill it to the plug and then pull the shifter tower and dump another quart of fluid in {I learnd that one the hard way}. Geno's Garage has a cooler and filter kit that I use and recommend. Track bars are good for 9 months or 15k miles, so plan on buying the mount to install a 3G bar if you dont have a plow frame on the nose. Other than that the only other thing I can say is that 4 of my dyed in the wool Chevy friends went out and bought CTD Dodges because of the things they saw mine do and the ammount it could push/pull/tow.
In the end, buy what you want and enjoy it ... Chris

One of my friends used to do Hot Shot runs and tried all 3 trucks. He said out of all of them, the Cummins pulled the best and lasted forever. He puled big water tanks all across the mid south. We have never had any problems out of ours and ours is a rebuilt wrecked one. Its an auto and pulls fine, gets good mpg and rides good. The Duraslack has more power as does the Furd but they are not as durable from what Ive seen and read as the Cummins.

I am a Chevy guy through and through, but I would choose nothing less than a Cummins, IMHO. Like others have said, we could hash out a 200 page dissertation on why we would make this choice, but what it comes down to is you getting out and test driving each truck you would like to buy. Then, from those choices, make sure you find out all the past info on the vehicle. This is extremely important when buying a used diesel truck. Everybody is different--we all have different likes/hates and this carries over into our taste in trucks. I will give a huge 2 thumbs up for the Dodge, but it's ultimately your choice in the end...

Power with a cummins is amazing, and they are pretty much bulletproof motors. The fuel mileage is phenomonal as well.

I'm a GM guy myself and I love my Duramax to death, but I would and probably will own a Cummins powered truck in the future. It's just a matter of personal preference.

What will the truck be used for? Do you tow alot? Do you drive offroad for work maybe? Lots of highway? What will be the main need for the truck?
