I would start checking the entire front end, could be anything that is designed to wear out... ball joints, upper or lower bushings... does it wander or pull going down the road, jerk to one side when you hit a bump??? The best place to start is to get a manual for truck ( Chilton or whatever ) that has front end inspection in it and just start checking it out.
Good luck!

Yep, something in the front end is not happy.
One note, there is a removable subframe connector on my newer Dodge that runs under the engine/tranny junction. I had to remove it to get the motor out and did not tighten it up fully once done. It made the same "pop" noise you described. Did you have any service performed recently?!?

I did have the steering gear box replaced. When I took it into the shop we did notice that the is a little bit of shaft play. The steering gear box was just replaced in Nov. so I am going to take it back to the shop and get a new one as soon as I get the gears in.

Just got the truck back......they put in a new steering box........I am going today to drop the truck off at a buddy's shop to get new custom drop links and and all new tie-rod ends. Hopefully that will fix the popping noise and take the play out of the steering.
