I have a chance to acquire a '97 s-10. And I want to put a 4.8 or 5.3 with a t-56 to start off with, then swap a 6.0 in later down the road. I'm wanting to know the approximate cost of this swap, i know many of you have dont it. Cost such as harness, engine mounts, misc. parts.
Which radiator are you using?
Is there an oil pan, such as the f-body or vette pan that will fit without having to cut the crossmember?.
I'm thinking of pulling the a/c possibly the heater core, ABS, and going to a manual rack, relocating the battery, and putting the ecm in the cab to provide as much room as possible under the hood, just incase i happen to come upon a turbo one day, and also make it as clean under the hood as possible.
Anyones advice or oppinions are welcome.

I don't know what the cost would be. BUT...... If you eventually put a turbo on it. You could try an STS. (Squires Turbo System) www.ststurbo.com They make them for the Silverado trucks amoung others. If they had enough of a following for V-8 converted S-10s. They might make a kit for it.
Advantage of STS. You could keep abunch of your under hood stuff as the Turbo is mounted down where the muffler goes.
$4,000+ The last time I checked.

harness from current performance is about 700 bucks. that will wire the LS1 into your existing harness from the cab back. They can modify and program the harness to run just about any accessories you want. then you need the price of the engine, the trans, and a new drive shaft. Mounts and headers. (i want to say those will run you about 350-400) The shifter for the 6 speed comes out around 6 inches further back than the stock shifter location. You may want to think about a new rear end as well. I was planning on doing a fully built 12 bolt. thats another 1800 right there. If you start with a 4.8 or a 5.3 and you dont dog the hell out of it, you will be alright with the stocker for a while. hope that helps. Check out jags that run (link posted earlier) they have a lot of swap stuff. I think they might even have a swap radiator and the fans as well. I havn't been there in quite some time. Google current performance wiring as well.

what he said. its gonna cost about 5k with a 5.3 or 4.8. thats if u reuse the stock manifolds and rear end. the ls6 is gonna cost 7k atleast maybe 8 because the engine and tranny are so much and you will need a diff rear. i would suggest picking up a ford 8.8 or 9". the advantage of the 8.8 is that if u get a 95 or newer u get disc brakes in the rear! if u have a 4.3 u can reuse the stock fuel pump, computer and radiator. there are some things that you will need for the ls6 swap specific, u will need the corvette accesories otherwise your frame will be notched to nothing also if u run AC you will run into some probs with frame clearance. s10v8.com and ls1performanceparts.com both make ls1 oil pans for around 400$. however u can just notch the cross member a little and use a 5.3 which is a heck of a lot cheaper. you can relocate the clutch master cylinder and the brake master cylinder under the dash kugelkomponents.com. the wiring for the ecm isnt hard its just time consuming, theres enough room for it behind the glove box. summit makes a battery relocation kit, the STS turbo is sweet and i was think of getting one when i put a ls1 in my 99 xtreme. whew, essays....gotta love em.

you wont necessarily need a new driveshaft depending on how you set the engine in there. you might also wanna pick up a conversion manual from v8s10s.com the manual is kinda outta date, he fabs all of his own stuff so dont be discouraged when he talks about making things, every single part that he fabs is now available from several places.

I have looked into building basically the exact same truck. I have a 94' single cab 2wd that already has a 4.3 and 5-speed. I bought a used 6.0 complete from an 02 HD truck, 02'F-body T-56, and other junk. I found a guy at www.v8s10s.com builds these trucks on a daily basis and really knows how to build them right. He even has his own conversion manual on how to do it. He shows how to build the fuel systems, motor mounts, and exhaust systems. Another good place to find swap parts is www.hotrodlane.cc. As for total cost involved, You can usually find a LS series motor complete for about 3K and if you can find a motor and tranny combo, add about another 1K. I am selling the truck and moving on to another project. Good luck with yours.
