Default 418 build update pics and broke a ring

Well I went over to mjhowards house and started building my motor finally. I learned alot of stuff from him and am glad its finally getting under way. I was filing the rings to the correct size and I went to file the 2nd compression ring and squeezed the ring on the ring filer and it just snapped So my buld hits yet another road block. This crap is getting really old really quick. Got the crank and 7 pistons in tonight Here are the pics for what it is worth

I didnt take too many pics cause I got pretty pissed after I broke the ring so.....

Here are some pics of the ring that broke it must have been bad from the factory better now then later I guess.

Ill get some more when it is more complete and during the install hopefully nothing else happens to slow down the process even more. I am so ready to drive my truck now. Its been down for THREE months, I miss it

Dude that sucks! Sorry to hear about it. Weird that the ring just snapped like that. What are you setting your ring gap to?

Do you have the specs on this rotating assembly? Bore/Stroke, did you have to clearance the block? More info please

That cluttered shop looks familiar.

top ring .020-.022
second ring .022-.024
third ring ~.015

I've broken some before spreading them but never compressing. Bad ring and it is xmas holiday. May be forever before he gets another ring.

4.030 bore 4.100 stroke. No clearancing, yet....

Yeah. I'm helping. You gap acording to application. A NA motor will have the tightest gap and a FI or heavy nitrous motor will have the widest. This is due to extra heat in the cyl that causes expansion and you don't ever want the ring ends to but because this would be detrimental to the cyl if there was no room to expand.

Ok, I knew about the gap and how to gap, I just dont know specific numbers. Do you know his bore/stroke? or if he had to clearance the block for the bigger crank?

4.030 x 4.100 no clearancing found needed yet. Haven't checked to see if it will clear the cam though. It is supposed to clear but we will see. His is a street/moderate nitrous application.
