please explain wireless internet and hotspots

i have had to get a laptop to do my school work on while i am still activated in the national guard. I got a dell wireless wlan card utility thing that i think is supposed to allow me to access the net from various hotspots. now how does this work. do i just try to get on the net or is there a subscription to this stuff.

depends where you are.. most hot spots are free. Watch your connection icon and if you can browse your good to go. If you can't then either the you need to pay for sevice (normally there is a website provided by the location) or the connection isn't strong enough

imagine a tiny radio tower and it transmitts/recieves to only about a 200 yard radius around it that is your spot when you are in the proximity you can get online. Go to a coffee shop that offers wifi connection or a hotel sit outside in your car and mess around if need be go inside and ask em how to get online. good spots include public libraries, campuses, school libraries
You can also get online outside peoples homes who have wifi, then whatever you do is on thier IP address
alot of retail stores have wifi intranets all of them are firewalled
