i've been reading about cams lately and i am wondering if this is the best setup for my goals. i have all mods in sig.this is a daily driver and cam and 100 wet nitrous is as far as i want to go with this motor.
i like the sound of a cam, so that is not a problem, but would this be too much for daily driving?
would i be getting the max performance out of this setup or do i need more supporting mods?
the 100 wet shot will come in the future, should this affect cam choice?
what would i be running in the quarter w/o nitrous with this setup?
what rpm should i be shifting at?

tr224
Thunder Racing Custom Camshaft - 224/224 .563/.563 112 LSA 1700-6600 RPM Power Band. Excellent mid-range & high RPM power. Requires computer tuning on automatic transmission cars. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.

comp 918 springs

thunder racing hardened pushrods

fuddle racing 3000rpm torque converter

transgo 4l60E shift kit (user install, not the hd2 kit)

comes out to be like $1200
is that reasonable?
how much should i expect for installation?

thanks for you opinions

Id expect you to run low 13's with that setup. If thats what your after you on the right path. There are more n20 friendly cams out there though I think the 224 is more of an NA cam. If you take the heads off do a valve job its well worth it.

with a 3000 stall cruising on the freeway, would rpm's always be above 3000?

any opinions on if shorty headers, stock pipes, and a magnaflow muffler good enough flow to support a cam like this?

a n2o friendly cam would be one with more exhuast duration? so would this be good?

Thunder Racing Custom Split Pattern Camshaft for Nitrous/Supercharger applications- 224/227 .563/.569 114 LSA (This cam will check in the 226 range on the exhaust lobe.) 2200-6800 RPM Power Band. Excellent mid-range & high RPM power. Automatic cars require computer tuning and it is recommend for optimum results on manual transmission cars. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.

and by low 13's, you mean with the spray right? cause right now i'm running 16's

thanks

yes with the spray. By n20 friendly I mean less overlap give futral or LPE a call. Cruising highway speeds stay about the same its only when the converter is unlocked that it stalls alot higher. I have the same gears and stock tire height at 80mph with a 3k stall its around 2200 rpms.
Without stage 1 and up heads I think a cam over 224 duration is a waste on a 5.3 but thats me.

I like the Comp 212-218-522-529-114.... I gained 34rwhp and 22rwtq

You can do a search and find alot of informatino about that cam..

It sounds good as well1!

The stall has nothing to do with freeway RPMs, since your converter is locked up at steady speeds. The determinants of freeway RPMs are your (1) transmission gearing, (2) rear end gears, and (3) tire diameter. Whatever your freeway RPMs are now is what they will be after your cam and TC install.

i see, that makes me more comfotable with the stall.
i did some more reading and i think 224/224 is too big for a daily driver
any suggestions for a slightly smaller cam?

Many people like the 212/218 from Comp. You could also fill in the Cam Request form at Cam Motion with the details of what you are after, and see what they say. That's how I ended up with my cam, and I am very pleased.

TR 220/220 .551/.551 112 Thunder Racing has dyno numbers showing 80 hp on their web site. Sick. it's a 5.3 grind, unlike most ls1 cams. everyone who's running it seems to love it, and has the numbers to prove it's efficiency.

that tr220/220 sounds like a good cam, are you running it?

when talking about working well with nitrous, if i only plan on spraying at the track every once in a while, is it necessary to plan the cam around the nitrous? i would still have high power gains with a 100 shot no matter what the cam right?

also, less overlap would mean higher LSA?

:werd: never threw mine on the dyno, but check out my sig. it's probably the biggest streetable cam i would go with in an ext. cab. don't know how good it does with nitrous though

Installation is pricey depending on where you get it done..

I was quoted everywhere from 300-1000 dollars... for cam install!!!!

Just get a tool set, and get at it!!!!!!!

jerome

yeah, i think i can do the cam. i read the ls1howto a few times and i just ordered that ls1 book.
the problem is dropping the tranny and getting a converter in there. i was quoted 600 for dropping tranny and any hours after that for installing shift kit and converter.

You can do the stall install yourself I did it on my 4wd truck which is much harder. Its not that hard just time consuming. I owuld go with the TR220 if oyu go any less i think you will wish you went higher.

jerome

yeah, i'm still reading and choosing between the tr220 and the tr224. some of the 4.8 guys are using the tr224, so i think i could run the tr224 with maybe like 3200 stall or something.

is there a write-up on how to replace the stall? is it just drain, unhook driveshaft, unbolt, slide off, bolt in stall, and put everything back?

i thought you needed a lift for dropping tranny? i also have 4wd.

thanks,
jerome

called around today and local shop wants 800-900 for cam install, 400-500 for tq converter install, and 600 for tuning.

i have a wait4me tune. do you guys think that he can tune it well, just from me telling him what size cam i have? or should i go with a local tuner?

TXsilverado

he should be able to get it running pretty good with a mail order tune, but a dyno tune is better.

if you end up going with the 220, give nelson performance a call for your tune. he hit the nail on the head with my tune and it's just a mail order one. i'm very pleased with the performance and reliability i get out of it.

jerome
10-13-2005, 11:45 AM
yeah i already have a wait4me, but i may get locally tuned. theres a guy that will do a street tune for 250.

i'm still looking for an article on changing the tq converter, anybody have a link?

also, how come people recommend smaller cams for a heavier ex. cab as opposed to a bigger cam for a single cab?
