View Full Version : 3.42 gears to 4.10??? Is it worth it?

In my s10 i have the mods in my sig. Using a calculator online it says my truck will top out at 130 with 3.42 gears. I know that the truck will only be racing short spurts so i feel i will be wasting alot of acceleration with the 3.42 gears. The same calculator says that if I changed to 4.10 gear it would top out at 117. I know i will have serious traction issues with the 4.10s, i already do with the 3.42s, but would it be worth the change if i babied it more from the start and hammered it on the top end? Any ideas?

The only thing I'd be concerned with is highway RPMs with gear like that. If your 350 S-10 is mainly a toy and not your daily driver that you rely on for work I'd go ahead and do it. Finding a way to keep the power to the ground on launch could be your next project with it once you do gear... y'know... something to keep you busy.

besides, how many times do you cruise around steady at 100mph+ speeds? The loss of a couple of mph top end is probably worth the lower end pull that youll get.... or umm, the tire smoke you'll get I should say

Thats what i figured. No its not my daily driver and with gas prices as they are its going to be my once per weekend driver. I figure i can baby it off the line and floor it when i shift to 2nd. That should get me to redline much faster through 2nd and 3rd. Whenever I get new tires I think I will do the swap.

Have you thought of 3.73?

I did think of 3.73 but i wanted it to be worth while to tear into the rear and change gears. 3.42 to 3.73 yields a 9% gain in torque multiplication whereas 4.10 yields 20%. 9% is better than zero but i dont know if its worth changing out. Thought I would ask everyone there thoughts.

At the end of the day, it's worth changing out if you decide it is. To say "20% is everything and 10% is nothing," like I hear you saying, doesn't make a lot of sense.

For me, the swap from 3.73's to 4.10's meant a huge increase in off the line power (and a corresponding decrease in mileage, which I didn't expect). It really was like night and day off the line.

If the change from 3.42's to 3.73's produces gains like mine, I wouldn't hesitate for one second to do the swap.

What is the OD (outside diameter) of the tires you'll be running on the S-10? Depending on what it is, you could put 3.73's in and get the performance of 4.10's.

For example, I have a 32" tire and 4'10's....you would likely experience the same level of performance with 3.73's and a 29" tire. :D

The tires i have now are 27" and whenever i upgraded i would be going to a 28" tire. from 255/60/r15 to 275/60/r15. You have certainly got me to thinking about the 3.73s. I do know that gas mileage will be horrible. It will take me another 500 rpm to reach the same speeds with 4.10s as i do with 3.42s. I will do some more calculations about tire size and gearing. Thanks for the advice.

I just picked up my Tahoe. Had 4.10's put in place of the 3.73's and on the drive home I got a parking brake light and ABS light and the traction control wouldn't let me go over 35mph until I turned it off. The PCM is not tuned for the gear change yet so I'm hoping thats all it is. I did not notice a big difference in perfoemance yet but I haven't been able to floor it from a stop. My tune should be in friday and by then I will have several heat cycles on the gears and will give it a real test  , and post up what I found. Going from 3.42 to 4.10 should male a big difference, espaecially with the tires tires you have. I'm running on 24's which is killing me.

4.10's would be fun but with that all i can say this week is "HAVE YOU SEEN THE PRICE OF GAS???????????????????????????" HAHA

Hey, how you liking those 4.10's? Get your programming issues squared away?

The stars are aligning against me or something. I bought VHP tuner from a guy on this forum to tune some things including the 4.10's. Well that has been lost by the post office. The tracking number he was given doesn't even show up in the system. Same day I ordered a new PCM tuned for my new mods. Well the tuner was out of town and took a couple of days for him to get back and get it done. It was finished and shipped, from TX. Well, hurricane Rita took care of the Friday delivery date. It has been pushed back to Tuesday. It is sitting in GA right now and should arrive as scheduled. So as of now, it's still runnin like crap and I still have to turn the Traction Control off to drive and the dash is lit up like a Christmas tree with false lights. I did punch it from a stop the other day and chirped the 24's, that's no small task. More to come Tueasday night, I hope. :bang:

With a 28" tire do the 4.10's. I have a S10 SBC with 3.73's, I use 3.73s and run 26" slicks and 27" street tires. When I had the 28" MT's on there it cost me a few MPH on the top with the 3.73's. If you are running a TH350 then you should deffinetly run a 4.10 because of the taller first gear, if you are running a 700r then your highway revs wont be that bad anyway with the overdrive.
