Default zl 402 ls2 based aluminum short block

It looks to me like this is the way to go in order to build the engine I want this winter. Heads would probably be the new Dart's, cam not yet determined but probably what Whitt1 has been running. I'll be using my Radix but will have to sell the shorty headers and get long headers and 3" exhaust.

My question(s) is; will all the parts from my 5.3 bolt on to the zl402? I'm wondering about things like the oil pan, oil pump, water pump, alternator/power sterring bracket, starter...... everything.

I suspect that it's all interchangeable but I don't KNOW that for a fact and I need to before I make any more plans.

Other than a stronger trans and rear gears is there anything else I'll have to buy other than the short block, cam & heads, and exhaust.

Do you think I can do the engine for $7k?

Thanks, Jim

Great link! What a treasure trove of information... a lot more than my ole brain can digest tonight. At this point I want to avoid decisions and just want somebody to tell me what to do and I'll salute and go do it!

A reputable salvage yard has quoted me a 6.0 with a trans for $2750 shipped. I'd have a pretty strong street engine with a .060 over 6.0, a cam and worked heads or... better, Dart heads.

What is a .060 over 6 litre? About 385ci?

Are you still gonna use the stock crank? have you thought about just going with a whole stroker kit since your gonna have to buy half the kit if you bore over? Those dart heads look great they flow around 300 at .550

I know a stroked and 30 over 6.0 is a 408

From what I can see a stroker kit costs about $2500 while pistons alone are about $600. That is, I guess, the whole point in a nutshell......i.e. I"m not sure the extra 20 ci that a stroker would net, over a 6.0 bored .060 over, is worth about $2k to me.

I'm thinking now that a .060 over 6.0 (I think that's about 385 ci) with good heads and a cam and my Radix will put out about as much hp/torque as my light to light street cruising will handle.... or at least as much as I'll need. If I want more then I can think about doing a stroker the winter of 06.

Is the radix gonna puff enough for a 402?

I've been told by knowledgeable people that the Radix will support a 402 with a pretty big cam and free flowing heads .... to the tune of about 600 rwhp... but that's about as far as a guy would want to go.

Still havn't decided which way to go. Stroker or no stroker. The difference is about $2000 and that seems like a lot to pay for about 20 extra cubic inches.
