I have a 5.3 that is toast I am thinking of getting a 6L short block and either getting my 5.3 heads reworked and getting the combustion chamber enlarged to 72cc or getting a set of stage 2 6L heads from WCCH. What will my compression ratio be on an lq4 6L with the 5.3 heads with a 72cc combustion chamber? Which heads would be better for a DD app and running 93 octane. How well will the lq4 and 5.3 heads work and how well will the 5.3 heads flow? I will be getting the heads ported, polished, valve job done and new guides. Sorry for all the questions just trying to get some direction as to what to do since Im probably going to have to do what I was originally planning on doing from the beginning.

1st, what is your HP goal? 2nd keeping the 5.3L cubic inch shortblock or are you going w/a bigger bore?
Are you wanting to put nitrous on it, or FI, or just N/A....
these things would help give you your answers

Im going to ditch the 5.3 in this scenario and put the 5.3 heads on a lq4 6L or get a set of heads from WCCH. I will be spraying nitrous for sure probably 175 shot since whatever I build will have a forged pistons and arp rod bolts so I can play more with the nitrous and not have to worry abotu anything. I would like 500 at the wheels atleast with the nitrous. I was at about 380 at the flywheel with my old setup without the nitrous I would like to have 450 at the flywheel then the nitrous on top of that. Right now Im leaning towards getting a 6L long block doing some P&P myself and then later on sending them to WCCH to get them nice and cleaned up. I will transfer all my new valvetrain stuff over to the 6L that I only got to play with for a week in the 5.3. :bang: :( I talked to Richard at WCCH this morning and he told me that the stock 6L heads will flow almost as good as a set of stge 2 5.3 heads so that pretty much sold me on a 6L long block and dooing the head work later.

Call Richard @ WCCH, he will tell you everything you need to know :judge:

I did call him thats why Im leaning more toward 6L heads and cam.

Pretty much what I would have suggested. The 5.3L heads can be made to flow very well, and the smaller chamber pushes the compression up while allowing you the abilty to run a higher lift cam because you haven't taken any metal off the heads.
Good luck, let us know what happens

if your getting in this deep you really need to
START USING THE SEARCH FUCKING FEATURE
there are calculators you are gonna need alot of info that you dont have but can find ex.....deck height. start here http://www.e30m3performance.com/myths/more_myths1/comp_ratio/comp_ratio2.htm
1. Search for a cr calc on the internet
2. call an engine builder
3. start reading

Well see the problem with me searching all over the internet is, is that I really get on mainly at work and they frown on surfing all day. At I home I have basically dial up with my internet connection so dont get all pissy at me for asking a question. I cant search for opinions and what people think would be the best setup for what I want to accomplish so chill out. Im trying to find out from knowledgeable people about what they have seen/done that works and what would be my best options dollar for dollar. I have talked to my speed shop that I got through abotu my options and I want multiple opinions not just 2 or 3 before I drop a large amount of money on a new engine. Im well aware tehre is a search button and for all those people that have basic questions that are repeated over and over again they should try a search. My questions are opinion questions and questions that to my knowledge have not been asked or atleast not in the form I am asking them. :wave-fing

I get irritated when people want everyone else to do thier leg work for them. Like figure out my compression ratio for me, how about I tell you how to figure compression ratio.

I figured the answer was obvious, LQ4 stock 72cc = 9.4-1, new heads with 72 cc = 9.4-1

Thats is fine I am always willing to learn something new and would be able to help people who ask "stupid" questions like me. Nothing personal man but since they have become more strict on internet activity at work I dont have nearly the time to search for my answers to my uestions. If you notice a few months back all my posts were anwering other peoples questions for the most part because I searched for my answers but now I dont ahve the time or the patients for dial-up so I ask them on here because people on here are knowledgeable like yourself you seem to know a lot about these engines and I do value your opinion.
Moregrip I didnt know the cc was 72 on stock lq4 heads like I said above I dont really have the luxury of surfing aorund to find my answers most of the time. But now I know the cc is 72cc.
Anyway back on topic. I have a few leads on a couple of complete 6L engines and I think if I can find one for a decent price then Im going to get it and do a home p&p job on it myself(with Mjhowards help im sure) and put some forged pistons and arp rod bolts and head bolts in it along iwth all the valvetrain goodies from my 5.3 in it. My cam should be alot tamer in the 6L which would be nice to get some low end back.

Dont need a complete 6L just rotation assembly block and heads. Im in Alabama right now so shipping would kick my ass too.
deck height is gonna be hard to nail down if your changing pistons or machining the block, if you go with a stroker kit I would call the manufacturer. If someone is building the short block for you they would know

Going to go with stock 6L crank Im going to be building this myself along with some help from MjHoward hopefully if I give him enough beer. LOL. :chug:
The block will be bored .030 over so Im goign with a set of forged pistons that will match thtta cylinder diameter. I would like to have a high 9 to low 10 CR so I never have to worry about detonation on a hot day or anything. I have been talking to my local speed shop guy today and he has called a few of his buddeis that deal with more of the late model stuff than he does and think we just baout have it figured out for the most part. Ill know alot more monday when a few emails are returned about some possible blocks to start off with hopefully I can pick one up cheap along with a set of 6L heads.

are the pistons flat topped? what is the cc of the heads? sonic testing on the block? is the block going to be decked I think they take off .003 to clean it up,same for the heads.
there are alot of guys on here more familiar with the machining, before you buy everything I would have all the info planned out and know what work is going to be done etc..

Honestly, I am still new to this late model modding stuff as well :drive:
I've been Hot Rodding for almost 20years now, started at 14yrs old(71Chevy Fullsize), but only have about 1yr into all this electronic age stuff :eek2:

The block is going to be bored .030 over to gain a little ci and make sure I have nice new metal to work with. Then block will be blue printed. The block will be magnafluxed(sp?) along with the crank and rods just for some added insurance. The rotating assembly will be balanced also. The pistons will be chosen to achieve the correct CR once all the machine work is done. The heads will have 72cc combustion chambers since they will be LQ4 heads. The pistons will be forged and I will add some arp rod bolts for some strength. The heads will recieve a little port and polish job, valve job, new guide seals, and stainless steel valves since I will be spraying. Im not a complete moron I have plenty of help its just that they are stuck in the 60s-80s and dont know a thing about the technical info needed for this newer engine build but they know the basics and what is needed for a good base as far prep work is concerned. Thanks for the help. I am going to start off by getting a good 6L block then send it off to the machine shop to get all the stuff done to it the go from there. If there si something Im missing let me know.
