Need some Do's and Don'ts choosing a cam and heads for a 5.3 w/a 7# Whipple boost. Will be doing LT's w/true duals and 4.10's. Needs to be streetable, but want it nasty!

Keep your lobe separation at 114 or more.I'd go with a 216/220 or smaller with a 5.3.

I had a 2002 Z06 cam in mine. I loved the way it pulled!

Thanks for the replies!

Am I keeping the lobe sep. further apart to allow for more of the compression to burn?

Rosscob; if you had the LS6 cam and liked it, why switch? Looks like you might have ditched the piggyback?

I did a motor swap and switched cams when I did it. I am most likely going to try that Z06 cam in the 6.0L at some point, but I don't expect it to react the same way the 5.3L did. Mabye it will, I guess I'll find out.

I did ditch all the whipple piggyback items for larger injectors and a custom tune. I hightly recommend this option! I talked to whipple's chief engineer not long ago, and all the new kits comming out will include a re-tune and larger injectors instead of the piggyback items.

Did you run the Z06 cam both with and without the piggyback?
I found a set of Z06 heads and cam for $600 and just don't know if it'd even work. Plus, I think you need to change pushrods w/ that cam, right?

I only had the Z06 cam after the removal of the whipple piggyback items. I used Comp 918 springs, but could have used the stock Z06 springs. I also used the stock pushrods. It would have probably been better to change them, but everything worked with the stockers.

I also used the stock heads. going to the Z06 heads may raise the compression higher that you want with the blower.

Thanks!
Yes, I've been told that the Z06 heads would raise the compression to @ 10.6:1. I don't know...

I wonder if when Whippke changes the operating system, they'll sell an 'upgrade' kit.

It should be alot easier to just buy a cam/head pkg. :bang:

Zo6 heads will lwer your compression they have larger combustion chambers.
as far a cam i was going zo6 all the way w/ a radix untill i talked to lingenfelter. they are having a sale on cams. they have 2 super charged cams the g-7 and g-2-3 dyno tested and designed for fi applications.
call and check them out befor you buy. also the 2002+ zo6 cams have a smaller base circle and could cause noise w/ out remaving some lash w/ pushrods or special valves
