I remember the ranger splash w/ a 4.0L v6 in it. Had a 5spd. Those things were quick. anyone ever have one?

My buddy here in town has one. He took a 4.0L SOHC V-6 out of an Explorer and swapped it in place of the 3.0L, and mated it up to the stock 5-speed tranny. It runs damn good too--high 14's with only one trip to the track. He has some other plans in store, can't wait until it's finished. :)

Just a lil history lesson. :)

93-2000 Ranger could have come equipped with the OHV 4.0L. The motor produced 160hp/225ft-lbs. The fastest stock is probably a low to mid 16.
In 2001, they ended offering OHV 4.0L and started selling them with SOHC 4.0Ls. These motors come with 207hp/235ft-lbs. The fastest stock is probably around a mid 15.

I bought mine in 2000 and once the new ones came out, knew I had to get that motor. Instead though, I went with the SOHC 4.0L from an Explorer. These came with 210hp/255ft-lbs, nearly what the old 302s came with stock. The motor fell right in with no modifications needed at all, unlike that of a 302 swap project.

The truck is pretty fun to drive. Not the quickest thing out there but it's fun.

Finding either 4.0L with a 5-speed mated up to it is much more rare than finding one with an auto. There's still plenty of each but the 5-speeds are a lot more rare.

And sorry for the misrepresentation there. I forgot that you swapped from the 4.0L OHV to the 4.0 SOHC.

does anyone know if a 2.5 liter with a 5-speed could get swapped for a 4.0, with same 5-speed. or would there need to be modifications.

my brother has a 94 splash with a 4.0 5 speed.

I built him a engine last yer for it 4.0 ohv

I tooksome 95 heads with the smaller combustion chambers and used them with the 94 pistons to get about 10:1 compresion, ported the heads, ported lower intake added headers, a maf and a chip. hes got a 4.10 posi. Right now best hes done is a 14.901 @ 92mph with a bit of wheel hop off the line.
From a 10 mph roll he beat my budies 92 5.0 with a few bolt on's. Cant keep the crappy trans togher very long though hes loking to swap in a t-5 soon.

I had a 4 liter/A4 back in '94. It went 10.4x in the 1/8th bone stock with 3.08 gears and after 3.73's, posi, exhaust, chip, and intake it went 10.20....woohoo!!! I probably woulda put a 5 liter in there but it caught on fire and burned to the ground before I got the chance.

Forgot to add that I put in a larger cam in from Comp Cams. Makes it sound like it has a cammed 302 in it at idle.

These trucks are still cool liitle trucks even though they are 11 year old.

They are alot of fun cause they are so light my brothers wieghs in at 3243lbs with him in it and a half tank of gas, lighter than most stangs.

I loved my little ranger, great for 4 wheeling could go alot of places bigger trucks cant had a canoe rack on it used to drive it right into the river drop the canoe off and go. I had it in water up to the headlights and didnt miss a beat. I beat on that thing relentlessly had a little 2.something v6 I was sorry to see it go only had to replace the 4x4 switch on it once that was the only repair. I miss that truck

The tranny from the 2.5L won't bolt up to the 4.0L.

But in 1994 those trucks were bad ass. :)

I remeber when they first came out and at an auto show they had one loaded with stereo equipment.. i mean it was bad...i dont remember exactly what it had... but the entire bed was full of subs and amps and what not.. sounded great. However, the stereo was so loud and shook so hard that it broke either the rear axle or snapped the leaf springs, i dont remember, but it was nasty.

Is there any plans for a supercharged Ford Ranger, lol

I'm in the process of putting a 347 stroker with AFR heads into my 94 Ranger, and hopefully be able to afford a supercharger as well.

Lucky for me though, I work in a machine shop and can build the engine relativly cheap compared to most. So hopefully I'll have some money left over for that haha

93-97 splaqsh's were readily available with the 4.0 5-speed combo. 2001 and newer rangers have awesome power and a large aftermarket followin. the worlds fastest 4.0 ranger is featured on therengerstation.com. i think it runs low 12s with a 75 shot. all rangers are great platforms for making a fast truck. 85-88s are prolly the most readily available and 93-97 flaresides have glass bedsides so they are really light. also most equipped with a 4.0 have an 8.8" rearend and if it doesnt, an explorer or 4.0 8.8 is a direct bolt in in replace of the 7.5". 289/302/351s are a relatively easy swap and a t5,t56,aod,c4,or c6s all fit nicely with the relocation or modification of the tranny cross member. awesome little trucks. i have owned 3 & am in the process of doing a swap i think i am the first person i have seen do.

Mine has ran a best 12.10 in the 1/4 and a 7.49 in the 1/8.....but its not a 5 speed anymore. Something about the M5OD not liking 450+ft lbs of rear wheel torque.:bang:
