Three earthquakes in four days for us in Cali!!!!
(and there was a HUGE one in Chili yesterday)
I study Geosicence so this is particularly exciting for me... . . .
Unfortunalty all of the earthquakes are on different faults and all are deep so we probably wont be making the central valley beach front property this time.

We have mostly "strike/slip" faults so not much chance for a tsunami. :P

i just felth the new one at work :), while there on different faults as things move around they can change/increase pressure on others so maybe these can get another big one rolling, I bet that 7 up north would have been somthing to feel!

Only geeks like me a Golden Velvet can get excited about catastrophies like this!!! I'm loving the earthquakes, the activity at Mt. ST.Helens, weird weather patterns etc etc.
The fact it was like 92deg 2 days ago and it's raining today is the coolest thing in my mind. Changes are taking place and while it's premature to think this is anything other than an isolated inncident of unseasonal weather it's cool to imagine that big things are going to happen. :)
In the next 2,000-3,000yrs... Hahaha

Golden.. get the hell out of there before that area becomes an island... by the way, you probably study about that too... how much will it take for a chunck of Cali to "break off" (Everytime i hear about an earthquake in Cali i think about the redhotchilipepers "californication" music video :D)

The San Andreas fault (which runs from the V of baja Cali to the SF Bay) is a subducted strike slip fault so so California is not spreading apart but rather sliding up. We joke about LA becoming a island but that really isn't likely. LA is just making a move north. And faster then you would think!
Also the RHCP song Californication is about is about porn.
Anything else you would like to know? :)

I think of the Tool song, but whatever.
Anyway, I thought there was a tsunami from the 7.0? It was only 6cm tall but it was a tsunami.
I'm so glad I bought all that property outside of Yuma! :D

It techincally won't break off. It's simply sliding up :p Cali is mostly on the North American Plate but a sliver of it is on the The Pacific Plate and as Golden stated the plates are sliding past eachother by about 5cm a year. It's only from about the Salton Sea to Point Reyes but it actually skips around San Fransisco. :)

Can you geologist answer me this? When I drive from here (Tucson) to San Diego (I-8), there's a vast desert region that is filled with these big black rocks. They're scattered and they go on for miles. Are these due to a big volcanic eruption a long time ago?

They could be. Some could be erratics (deposited by glacial activity) . It would really all depends on their composisiton. From there Golden Velvet could tell you where they might have originated from.
If those are the ones I'm thinking of scientist are not quit sure yet.

They are igneous (volcanic) :)
As a sophomore I spent a week in that desert studding rock formations, the boron strip mine, solar 1 and solar 2.

i figured you would know. You're the scientist, I'm just a loser who watches too much TV and reads lame books about climatology. LOL
I was scared to answer because of the manganese oxide coated rocks found in the southern deserts. They would have to be somewhat young rocks since they are still out in the open and not part of a compressed then exposed strata right?

well from my understanding there is one section on the plate that is pushing the other plate up. So that means that one side has to be going down. Then again I did take this Geology about two years ago so i cant remember crap.
Hell today I was going over action potential pumps and the electron gradiant that is needed to drive membrane potential across an nueuron, and i cant even remember that!!!! that was 7 hours ago!!!

Oh ok. And ya i know what the song is about... but the music video, its like a cartoon/video game setting and they are running through California as it breaks up by earthquakes at the end, thats what i was talking about.
But thats cool, we wont be one less state anytime soon. :D
How fast is it moving north? Is it measured each year or day to day?

yeah the coolest thing in that class that I have learned were how mountains formed, many of the moutains we see today are still growing. For example I think Mt. Everest is still growing taller at some rate.
