ASP Pulleys Kicked My A$$ Tonite
#1
Went to install my ASP underdrive pulleys tonite. Unfortunately, I didn't succeed. I took off the shroud (pretty easy) and went at it from the top end. Alternator pulley was easy enough, but the crank pulley really gave me fits. First off, some sorry SOB broke both my 1/2 and 3/4 impact wrenches. I thought what the hell, wedge it and put 325 LBS of Randy behind it. Never could get it to wedge good enough to get all of me behind it. Then I got to thinking, that #$#!&*$ fans looks like it will be in the way of the gear puller. So I gave up for tonite. <img border="0" alt="[whiner]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" />
Two questions for those who have ventured before me on these particular trucks:
1. Did you have to use an impact to break the crank bolt lose?
2. Did you remove the fan?

Thanks

Honestly, i got about as far as you, but w/o the impacts. I gave up and took it to MTI. Some of the guys have done it. I'm sure they will post up.

i used a impact wrench and some elbow grease. i never took the fan off either. it took me at least a good couple hours to get it all done. a lot of cussing helped out also.

you got further than me before i said fuggit when i was going to do it. i dont have impact wrenches so im still not sure if i wanna do it up here at college. so.... they have been sitting in my back seat since january haha.
when i was looking at it though, looked like it woudl be ALOT easier with the fan off

I just ordered some ASP pulleys from TBYNE Motorsports and I was contemplating trying to put them on. After reading this I think I'll have my mechanic do it and tell him he needs an impact wrench to do it. I'd rather pay him a couple hours for his time then get myself worked into an absolut tizzy trying to do. I'm getting to old for that crap, money well spent in my opinion. I'll buy him a beer when he's done <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" /> .

I was able to get the crank bolt off with a cheater pipe and a lot cussing. I was so happy to get the damn thing off, only to find out that I could not get the puller on because of the fan blade. I was not even gonna try to take that thing off. Needless to say, I was so pissed I took it to the dealer and had an off-duty mechanic put them on in about 20 minutes.
I just realized that the pulley install would have been simple if I did it with the electric fan mod. Anyone who has not done these mods and are planning on it, Do them both at the same time and save yourself the headaches. It would also make a huge difference in throttle response. Good luck getting traction <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I did mine without an impact and did not take the fan off either. If you think it is tough getting it off without animpact, try putting the new one on. Too much work that way. If I were to do it again I would definately use and impact and take off the fan.

Really, I dont know what is so hard (sorry guys)...DON'T try prying it off! Although your guys' stories give me a funny mental picture of someone red faced and cussing at his stupid pulley <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> The EASY way to do it if you want to do it yourself is to get a harmonic balancer puller tool from Checker (or whatever your local auto parts store is). You'll probably have to put down like $50 deposit, but you'll get it back when you return the tool (if all the parts are still there) Oh yeah a good impact wrench helps too with both disassembly and install of underdrive. Good luck guys.

Don't worry, they suck to install on F-bodies also. That is one thing Ford does right, makes close tolerance pulleys with a keyway. GM makes them a clearance fit that must be basically pressed on with the bolt. SUCKS!!
I was one of the first guys to install a crank pulley on my Formula back in 98. After doing several Mustang swaps, I figured this should be cake. Needless to say, I had to bum a ride to work the next day. I broke a ratchet, and my el-cheapo pulley puller broke too. I swore that thing was the Devil himself.
A good set of balancer pullers (about $45) and impact tools are the only way to handle this chore. I swear I'd rather swap heads on a motor than to do that with hand tools again!

Without the thermal clutch fan in the way the pulley R&R took about 30 mins with air. The fan took a torch to come off and about three hours when I put the electric fans on so I guess it all washes out in the end. Once that god forsaken fan comes out every engine related mod was easier to accomplish.
