View Full Version : my GMC - Leave it, or Lift it?

Lets take a little vote. I'm somewhat bored with seeing all the slammed trucks, and have always liked lifted trucks just about the same as slammed trucks. I know lifting costs more, but I think it looks meaner. Here are some pics of the way it sits now, and some with a Photoshop lift (6" suspension lift, 33" tires, 18" Boyd wheels)

(stock height, 17" MB wheels)

(6" suspension lift, 33" tires, 18" Boyd wheels)

I'm speaking with a guy on the lifted parts and wheels. I think it really makes the truck look unique

If it is a automatic i would be leary of it. My old roomate had a 97 tahoe we lifted it 6 inches with 35's then lifted it another 3 with body lift and 38's. The tranny did not last very long even with being reprogrammed. Plus the gas mileage sucked and it was hard to tow with. Looked bad ass though.

LOL! Maybe I need some side steps too

GM trucks sit alot lower than Ford trucks in the same class. Even with this lift, it is only about 3.5" taller than a stock F150

Tony,
The photoshop lift looks nice. Its not extreme, but does give the truck character. My opinion is do it.

Nice color BTW, is that the dark gray metallic? That and the indigo blue are my favorite GM truck colors.

i say do it! i got only a 3" body lift on my Z and I love it, but as with all things I'm already getting used to the height, now I want to go bigger!!
as i heard one guy say:
"slam it, lift it, just dont leave it stock!!"

i'm not a huge fan of lifted 2WDs but that actually looks pretty good. go for it.

Fulton, you are correct. Its called "storm gray metallic" and is one of my favorite GM colors.

I pulled the trigger earlier this evening, the guy will be delivering the lift/wheels tomorrow morning

I can't wait to install it all!

Leave it!!! I did this to my new chevy back in 95. The fact that it was 2wd was sickning. It was worthless. When you would go offroad you couldn't steer in the mud and not to mention my gas milage went through the roof.I liked the way it looked at first but grew out of it real quick. It's kinda like a ricer trying to make there civic fast and put exaust on it. Draws attention to you and makes you look stupid.

Well, I personally would not lift a 2WD truck. It will KILL any mileage and performance you may have had before, kill towing, and makes it look like something it is not. I would drop it a little and add a whipplecharger. But this is not my truck, and to each his own....

Everytime I see a lifted truck that is very obviously a street driver (not some work/offroad vehicle) the words that come to mind are "fucking redneck jackass". But hey, do whatever you want

My vote, leave it stock height or lower it. Your truck is high enough already and I'm tired of trying to see past huge mountainous vehicles blocking my view in every direction. You better be hauling some shit in that thing.

I say lower it too, there is something so badass about a full size truck that is lowered and with nice rims on it! It's not as if you need the height to get through the snow like we do up here!

Lift that shit! Since you say you've already got the parts, guess you are going to anyway. I would put some lower gears in it though since you've gone to bigger tires. Some 4.56s maybe...or 4.88s in a 12-bolt

less hassle, less noisy (excessive tire noise), crappy gas mileage, goodbye warranty(suspension), crap could start to go wrong after a while..(bad leaf spring, etc...)

BadBlackZ, don't worry about Jon (jmX). He lives in Austin, the "San Francisco of the South". He's probably used to "quirky" type boys and their rainbow toys LOL.

Don't worry, I'm half redneck, I listen to country music, and have been known to wear my Stetsons weekly. Slammed trucks look cool, but are not my personality at all. I see slammed trucks as pretty useless, like defeating the purpose of a truck. I work on a gravel road and most of my clients (oil company execs) are all southern rednecks too. We like bigger, faster, etc..

MarkZ71, I'm a Texan and proud to admit that I don't have to agree with anything that goes on in Alabama

Make all the comments you guys want, but the fact is, WAY too many people buy the biggest damn vehicle they can get their hands on these days. It's gotten way out of hand.

Here, here is a picture I shot while sitting in my little fuel efficient C5 at a light. 13 trucks/SUV's/Minivans behind me in the lane next to me, and although the picture doesnt show it, my lane had 10 in a row (can only see 3 in the pic).

RE-DAMN-DICULOUS

A big ass lifted truck annoys me because:
1) I cant see past it in traffic, meaning its hard for me to react to stuff ahead early on the road
2) The headlights are so high they shine right at my eyes at night
3) The huge ass tires which are now not in a wheel well fling up every little rock and dirt back at the cars behind them
4) If the truck also has a chrome bumper, it puts the bumper at the perfect hieght for MY headlights to reflect off the chrome bumper and shine right back in my face! That is just dangerous.
5) If the bumpers were not relocated, the bumpers are so high that it screws up the safety of any sort of collision for the other vehicle, assuming again the other vehicle isn't a jacked up redneck truck too.

To sum up, you are annoying the shit out of everybody else. But hey, fuck em, right?

tony i think it will look good lifted, althought it still looked very good as it was. myself i couldnt lift a 2wd around here because i would want to get off the road and hit a mud hole, and also wouldnt want the hell every damn person in town would give me for lifting a 2wd. around here its tons of lifted trucks, sadly a bunch are just 3in body and 33s....

my next truck will be lifted, alot, maybe 8-9inches...

jmx, is your vette lowered, or stock? didnt think so. to many people they would rather have a lifted truck than a fast vette. they might think that pouring money into a small 2 seater car just to be faster isnt worth it and is flat out stupid. myself i think making something fast is good, hence the reason im on this site. i love a lifted truck and will probably own one, one day.

learn something new everyday i guess.... nineball part redneck.... didnt think yall big city folks could be redneck....

jmx, i have always loved corvettes and plan on buying one, one day; i also like lifted and lowered trucks. i just dont like it how people stereotype others on what they drive, if you are driving a corvette a majority of other vehicles will sit higher than your car, even an un-altered vehicle. if you are that anal about it, then dont drive your car. you live in texas, where most of the population drives trucks/suv's....
hell maybe one day one of those "lifted redneck jackass, yuppies" will help you, you never know. just becase you cant see in back of you, now you hate everyone's vehicle that is taller than yours? i dont have the attitude when i see a corvette i'm like, "look at that rich, snobby, old bastard driving that sports car"

Hmmm... my Formula is considered a low riding vehicle, and I daily-drove that car for over 3 years and never complained about anyone driving bigger vehicles around me. I just leave myself more space and drive around them when possible. Growing up in Texas, I'm just used to seeing big ass SUVs and trucks, so they don't bother me.

To be honest, I was thinking of buying an H2 when the Formula is paid off this summer. BIG. I like it.

anyways i agree with you nineball, you worry about the other drivers and their actions, that way you dont get screwed.

and lifted truck guys/gals and lowered aswell are just like yall fbody and vette (ybody?) enthusiasts. they dont like their car/truck/suv stock, stock isnt good enough, so they lift or lower, swap gears etc. alot of these people put several thousands into their lifts etc on fullsizechevy. their are some badass rides over there, and alot of them arent inbred rednecks... From what i've heard of Cali, there are tons of lifted trucks running around on 44s.... hell thats about as tall as the roof of your car....

anyways im rambling.... maybe some FSC guys will come in and give you some advice on lift and different options out there nineball. either way good luck with your truck... oh yeah i almost forgot... i think Ewogo is selling his lift wheels and tires.... he is going with something bigger i believe......

It's Alright To Be A Redneck

It's alright to be a redneck
It's alright to ride around in a dirty old truck
Catch a bunch of fish and shoot a bunch of duck
It's alright to be a redneck

Chase around the girls on Friday night
You wanna make 'em feel alright
It's alright, it's alright,
It's alright to be a redneck

It's alright to be a redneck
It's alright to work hard in the sun all day
Drink a couple beers after bailin' hay
It's good to be a redneck

Drive by Ernie's for some BBQ
Showin' off your brand new boots
It's alright, it's alright,
It's alright to be a redneck

The kid's are gonna cry
And the chicken's gonna fry you know it
The car wont run
So your cousins comin' by to tow it

It's alright to be a redneck
It's alright to have a girl named Thelma-Lou
Who dont mind a little kiss when ya got a little chew
Party on the road by the light of the moon
Dancin' to a country tune

It's alright, it's alright
It's alright to be a redneck

Go ahead and lift it man, no one else is gonna make you happy cept yourself.

Sure a lifted 2WD cant go places a 4x4 can, but you gotta be happy in the vehicle you drive in.

As far as there being too many big vehicles and giving the low guys a fit, thats really too bad.

Nothing gonna change and you gotta be prepared to deal with it whenever you decide to drive a vehicle that is low to the ground.

Ill admit, i kinda feel bad when my headlights are in someones rear view mirror, but what the hell am i gonna do, trade my truck in so they wont have a glare in their face? Sorry, but no.

Brandon, I already bought the parts to lift the GMC. They were delivered on Saturday, and I hope to get them installed on Tuesday or Wednesday.

FFS (Full Force Suspension) 7" lift from PerformanceLifts.com (4" spindles, 3" springs, upper A-arms, 5" blocks, 4 shocks)

Nitto Terra-Grappler 33" tall x13" wide x18" wheel All-Terrain tires

Boyd Coddington Timeless Six 18x9.5" polished wheels.

Can't wait to get it installed. I'll post some before/after photos. It will be a completely different truck for sure

CashDudeHomie, Nineball came on here and posed "Leave it, or Lift it?", and I replied with my answer. He asked for opinions, and I gave mine. You guys sure get defensive, maybe you all should go chew on some dip and relax (oops, did I stereotype again?)?

Modsquad..."YOUR IN TEXAS, GET OVER IT!"? My *what* is in texas? Did you mean YOU'RE? Yes, I am in Texas, but that doesn't change the fact that huge vehicles EVERYWHERE is not a good thing, it just means it's common down here. I was born and raised here, and I'm not planning on leaving. When somebody specifically asks me if they should jack their truck up, I'm going to specifically reply no, and state my reasons.

Fast4.8, there is a 4x4 looking 3rd gen fbody here in town with a big Jesus banner across the windsheild. The guy wears a big ol' cowboy hat too.

I have nothing against trucks in general. I have something against everybody buying the biggest vehicle they can get their hands on, then, making it even bigger. Certain people have a need for things like that and that is ok, but a lot of people I see driving them just seem to drive them by choice. If camaros, vettes, or mustangs somehow inherently made driving more dangerous for people around them then I'd be talking out about those too, but those cars aren't inherently dangerous to others. *HUGE* vehicles ARE, because they block the view of other drivers on the road, they take much longer to stop in emergency braking situations, and the weight/size delta between small and large vehicles makes it so that collisions will more likely be fatal. Lifting a truck "just because" only makes those problems worse, and thus, when asked "Leave it, or Lift it", I say "Leave it".

Sterotyping is so great isnt it, im far from redneck in "real life" but yet when some one watches me pull up they think im some redneck that is going to be chewing some "dip" but yet im not. But dont worry, when people see a C5 drive up they usually think it's either some rich punk, or it's some one in a mid-life crisis. sterotyping is ridiculas but it still happens..i live with it. Were not all redneck..but shure can act like them if you want.

PS, you dont think i have a use for my truck? We have some dips on main street that would eat your C5 alive.

JMX- you keep driving your " sorry about your little penis car" and making your shitty remarks. That will be the death of you when one of those " big ol'redneck trucks" runs over your stupid ass and leaves the words super swamper on your head.

Some guys like them lower, some guys like them higher, some like faster, some like louder stereos. To each their own.

2. A suspension lift IS function. I'll have increased ground clearance, better shocks, wider tires for traction, etc. The aftermarket spindles I'm installing are also much stronger than factory cast stuff, and were designed to take alot of abuse. Stock is BORING.

Houston is flat. We don't have mountains or rocks to climb here. That doesn't mean we shouldn't customize our trucks and lift them. Thats like saying you shouldn't make your cars faster if you are not using them strictly on the race tracks.
