good move.
I would recommend doing a fresh install of XP Pro. Dell tends to load their computers with lots of non-essential services and programs- these could get in the way.

I hope you got one with a serial port.

The 8600 doesn't have a serial port. The 8500 I had that was stolen had a serial port, but Dell removed it in the 8600 model.

I wouldn't trust anything other than a PCMCIA/PC Card to Serial adapter.

the guys on HPtuners forum say it needs time to connect, but once it does, it s doesnt interrupt...
I've heard the PCMCIA to serial adapter is the way to go.

Cool deal, I was going to go the USB route, I would not see why it would take a while to connect. SUB 2.0 are pretty fast.
BTW I went to order HP today, and you have to use paypal to order it. I hate paypal, it freakin pisses me off.

Yeah, PayPal is BS, I trust them with my info.....not. But you can also send them a money order if you don't mind waiting, I just decided to do the PP thing.

I would trust an IP->Serial terminal server, but this kind of work is what I do for the $$. To be safe, PCMCIA->Serial should work fine.

I have to uninstall and reinstall the driver every time I use the USB with the new laptop I have (Dell Inspiron 9300). I will be getting the PCMCIA card. I miss the ease of doing it with the old Toshiba and the Serial port.
