I got a set of Richmond 4.10s installed about a month ago and I have noticed that at freeway speeds there is a very high shrill 'tone' that comes at light throttle. I dont want to call it whine just yet..

It comes on at specific freeway speeds and I had to get a second opinon that it was even there and I wasnt hearing things. The shop that did the install went for a ride with me and said there was no gear whine and I have been told that Richmond gears just make noise.

What do you guys think??

I have also heard that Richmond gears do make noise. I went with OEM gears for that very reason.

My 3.90 richmonds have made that same noise on the highway for almost 2 yrs now. No problems out of them and I have put 30+k on them.

Go with OEM gears and they won't whine.

My Yukon 3.90s don't whine at all. I have heard people say that Richmonds whine.

I'd call mine more of a steady subtle whistling sound. I believe Richmonds are cut differently than other gears, for strength rather than quietness.

Sounds like RICHMOND GEAR to me. They will probably last forever but if you want it quiet, replace it with OE, US GEAR, YUKON or just about anything other than RICHMOND.

yeah it's a high pitch whine gets preety noise when you hit their sweet spot. Guy that put mine in says that's all he runs in his race cars and he pushes them well over the 800 mark. So I figure to me they are pretty well bullet proof.

most of the gears will hold up fine for what we would ever use but the ricmonds are better imo. my .02

Most all of aftermarket gears wine. I had 3.42 motives and they wined.

If my richmond gears whine I can't hear it over the headers and radio. I like a good whinning sound it usually comes from superchargers,....or loosers.
