In my 04 Sierra Crew Cab, I am still using the stock radio with CD player and Cassette. Wanted to keep the stock look since I've had a truck stolen from me before. Anyways, I am running Infinity Kappas to the 4 doors and then 2 10" subs behind the seat and 2 400w amps pushing the doors and subs. That being said, I didn't do the wiring, electrical's not really my thing, and I've had the system hooked up for a while, but lately, I have noticed some issues with the stereo system.
It only happens when I am listening to CD's, but occassionally it will hit a spot and all the sound will be muffled. This will last for a few seconds and then go back to normal. It doesn't do it all the time, so I don't know if its just the cd's themselves, I highly doubt it, or if there is a loose connections somewhere. Any ideas guys?

It is highly possibel it is just the deck. I have known a lot of people who have had problems with their stock decks.

I Have A 04 Crew Cab Too And I Installed A System And I Am Running It With My Stock Radio Cd Player, Until Now I Have Not Had A Problem, I Have Always Hooked It Up With The Stock Radio's Before And Have Never Had Problems??? Maybe There Is Wire Loose?? Hey Do You Have Pics Of You Sub-box??? Who Made It For You?? I Had A Hard Time Trying To Find Someone To Build Me A Box Without Moving The Whole Rear Seat A Little To The Front... Alot Of People Would Do It But They Can Only Do 8".. So I Finally Found Someone To Do It And Put Some 10".... ...

First things first....
Ensure that this ONLY happens with CDs. If it NEVER happens with the radio then there is a good chance it's just your deck. Especially if you are playing burnt CDs. If this ever happens with the radio too, then you could still have a bad deck but it might also be soemthing below.
If ALL the speakers in the car do this muffled thing at the same time. IE all your mids and they are all running off the same amp then it could be your amp and it's RCA connections.
Check to ensure your RCAs are tight in the amplifier and that they do not gound out on anything.
Your RCA could be getting pinched somewhere.
You could also have a faulty connection at the line converter or the converter itself could be going bad. It happens.
Your amp could be going out. Or you have an intermittant short in one of your speakers which causes the amp to go into protection mode and reduce output or shut down.
If the subs cut out also
Then I would say the problem is the most likely the line converter or it's connections. Or the deck itself.
I'm tired after my 75mile commute so bear with me if I missed some stuff.

Well, I can tell you for sure that it only happens when I play CD's. I never have any problems playing the radio or even dare I say.....Cassettes. Yes, I still have some. lol.
Best I can say is that it will muffle only through the door speakers. When it muffles, I can still hear the bass from subs although as the sounds starts to come back it seams like it has to build back up, even the bass from subs takes a second or 2 to get back to full power.
I'm thinking that it a bad connection at the rca's but I'm not sure. I need to just take a day off and check all the connections.

What is needed to wire up the factory CD deck to aftermarket speakers and/ or and amp??
Is it possible to wire up an amp? I imagine there's a harness available, but what does it cost?
thanks,
Chris

Just get a new deck. The stock unit sucks and will not give you the full benifit of using good aftermarket speakers.
If you absolutly must use the stock deck then an SVEN4 or SVEN2 (Peripheral) will allow you to convert from high to low level outputs and run an amplifier. Cost is about $35-$45

I'm not replacing the speakers ... I just want to add a 10" sub and a 2-channel amp.
Where can I purchase an SVEN4 or SVEN2 ???
thanks for your post ...

Ahh, I would still replace the deck. Even with stock speakers. Or at the very least add some "caps" on them. The caps act as a high pass filter so it reduces the amount of bass the midranges see and it will allow the speakers to play louder and sound cleaner. You don't want BASS coming out of your mids. :)
Almost any "high to low" converter will work but I like using the SVEN2 since it is adjustable. Some of the non adjustable ones will put out too much or too little signal for your amp to work with or they are just so cheap you get noise.
Almost any stereo shop should carry Peripheral products, even some of the chain stores do. :) You can also check out the Peripheral website. Any shop that deals with AAMP of America can get them for you.
Good luck with the install mate :)

this is excellent advice ... I notice the bass coming from the door speakers is kinda distorted, and sometimes rattles. If I could limit the amount of bass coming from the speakers, then the entire stereo would sound a lot cleaner right?

Exactly!
That's why i like to use aftermarket decks. Most of the decent ones nowadays have high pass iflters built into them. They have a much better slope (12db vs 6db) and they are somewhat adjustable.
But you can still put caps on your stock setup and it will work great. Much less distortion and less risk of blowing stuff up. :)

F8L, any idea which "caps" I need? Part #'s / manufacturers would be a huge help ...

try something like these inline filters. they reduce the bass to your stock speakers.
Aye, Crutchfield has em as well as any decent local stereo shop. They should only cost you between $5-$12/pr.
Get ones that will crossover you front speakers at about 150hz since it's only a 6db per octave slope. Get ones that will crossover the rears at like 250hz if you have 4x6" speakers in the rear doors. Actually do the rears at 250hz no matter what size they are. LOL
As long as your stock speakers are 4ohm (non Bose) then you would want to use a capacitor value of:
Cap..... Xover frequency
Front Speakers= 265....... (150hz)
Rear Speakers = 159....... (250hz)
Then try setting the xover on your subwoofer amp to about 80hz and see what that sounds like. Try lowering the xover setting and raising it a little and see where it sounds best too you, not neccesarily the loudest, the best SOUNDING ;)
