Im not going to give you shit. Its a hard combo to beat. If I could fit comfortably I would have bought one. I had enough of the 2 seater thing with the vette's and they at least had some room to recline.
Pulley, CAI, tune, catback and some tires should be nice  I may try for my first L kill tonight. Despite the fact that my two fron tires look like a bad set of buck teeth!!! :bang:

12s are pretty easy in a Lightning. It's the 11s that start getting expensive... I'd run the thing bone stock first while the weather is good. Usually you're in the bottom 14s in warm temps and as low as high 13s when colder. Unless you run in perfect DA and are an excellent driver or use good tires. Then mid 13s is doable.

Congrats! They are cool trucks. :)

i think i might run 13s stock thats what im reading at the L forums. they say they run 13s stock.

F8L Z71
11-06-2004, 07:50 PM
They CAN... They don't always though. LOL

Kinda like a Camaro Z28 CAN run 12s stock or even low 13s but I've seen my fair share in the 14s.. Damn rookie drivers. Hahaha

Good luck and let us know what it does (while it's cold)... before you tear into modding it ;)

If they are the new models and used correctly they are good. Not perfect though. Expect to be about 2-3 10ths slower than what the meter says. I believe that's what Parish estimates on his. I figure mine varies between 1-2 10ths on avg. but I have not done enough track testing to be sure. Only twice.

Lightnings are cool. i have one as well. i love it, though many will bash you, take it in stride. it is the ultimate performance truck combination. drag racing as well as handling like a dream (the chebby boys cant say that, even with a fast drag truck).

14.1@97 to 13.7@100 is the extremes (hot air to amazing air) bone stock.

congrats, I almost bought one before I bought my Denali.
I would have gotten it, but they were trying to screw me on my trade in and the salesman was being a prick. I know exactly what you're talking about, they let me a '04 Silver Lightning out and test drive it and I was impressed.

i dont consider myself a ford or chevy guy. remember, look at the sig. i race my TA. i love to drive my Lightning. if chevy made something along these lines, i would buy it from them. but they dont so that isa moot point. i paid more than 15K, believe me, but i bought mine brand new. you got a good deal, depending on miles and condition.

for 500 bucks in mods, you will be running consistent 12s (and that is all new pricing).

Ive been thinking about selling my truck for a Lightning-my buddy has one and your right its awesome to drive and handles like a sports car-the whine of the supercharger always get me addicted to that truck plus like gator said its a total package. Cant beat that congrats on the truck man and good luck modding it-let us know what the outcome is. oh btw where did you get a Lightning for 15,800??

just to play devils advocate. yes it is the total PERFORMANCE package, but you must be ready for no room in the cab, crap ergonomics (like no real center consol and shit cup holders), harsh ride quality (factory bilistein shocks), and cab noise (big ass tires and overal cheap build). ofcourse it wont have the offroad or towing prowess (tows easily 5K lbs rating and much more if you load correctly).

but you are buying a performance truck.

you can get 99-00 for that price pretty easily, 02s normally go for 21+ though ! you got a good deal.

The lightning and the 03-04 cobra are two fords i would be proud to drive.

I beat him on two runs ( he had shit for traction) but he beat me from a 50 mph roll.Do yourself a favor and run some good synthetic oil, it'll be worth it in the long run. Congrats and Enjoy!!

actually the first thing i would do is put the LARGEST crank pulley i could on it. ofcourse have a custom tune for it too.

Johnny Lightning ran 13.2 directly off the showroom floor - I want to say it was his 02.....even saw someone post a 13.1 over on the boards last year......but yes, I think 90% of people will only run a 13.5+ stock, I only ran a 13.4 with a chip and filter on my 01, but it was my first time to the track EVER

you must be ready for no room in the cab, crap ergonomics (like no real center consol and shit cup holders), harsh ride quality (factory bilistein shocks), and cab noise (big ass tires and overal cheap build).
Are you talking about a Lightning? My 01 felt like it had twice as much space in the cab as my Sierra, great ride with the Bilsteins, not near as much cab noise, and pretty much great build quality.....I know you dont have a RCSB GMC/Chevy but honestly it sounds like you've never ridden in one......and yes I'm sort of talking crap about my own truck here (Sierra) but when I read that I was really suprized lol - although none of that bothers me in my Sierra, I enjoy it alot more than my Lightning, knowing its "built, not bought" ;)

And about the pullies thing.....I know you guys are joking around but if this kid really does take your advise and goes and puts a 10lb lower pulley on - 18psi will blow up that motor the first time he lays into it. Not sure what year it is, but BEWARE of the weak rods in 01-02, I speak from experience.

about the price, my dads friend buys and sells cars. he makes a lot of money. he got it a lot chaper than what he sold it to me.he bought it at an auction he says it was a pretty rare find for an auction. about the pulley ill get maybe a 4 or 6 puond or something that will keep me from blowing it up.

what the hell are you talking about?

I had a 01 Lightning, and I was disagreeing with you about pretty much everything you said about the harsh ride, interior room etc, compared to my Sierra. The Lightning had more room in the cab, better ride, build quality etc etc....

And I agree with you that youre buying the total performance truck package. Although some people (me) would rather build up a GM truck to look and perform as well or better.

Hopefully that cleared it up.

thanks for your opinion. i have one too. i own an L. i own a yukon. is your GMC able to run with a pulley'd L yet? as for ride harshness not even a comparison. yukon hands down. but the bitch rolls like a boat in the corners lol. i will say that the 03-04 Ls together with the Bilistien shocks and the new revised rear leaf spring make for a harsh ride. stiff as my TA was when it was on 17s all around, LGM autocross springs, big sway bars.

Im going to go in the build your own direction-I to think the L is the total package but im one that likes 2 have a unique truck and do my own performance mods instead of buying it stock with all mods done-no fun then and you get bored 2 quick.IMO

I have the misfortune of repairing a fleet of 75 F-150s for a living and
a big thing with F-150 is to check the tie rod ends and ball joints at every oil change. I've replaced so many of these its not funny (usally 1-3 sets a week). I've had 15-20 trucks towed in with seperated tie rods, and couple with broken lower ball joints.

No, my truck probably isn't in the 12s yet, and while I haven't been to the track, or even ran a Lightning, I'd say from comparison with other trucks its good enough to easily run with a stock L, which I though is what we were talking about - "buying the performance package".

I guess the 03-04 L's with the redesigned susp ride stiffer than the 01's....I had drop springs and shackles on mine and it rode much better than my Sierra.....although I'm revising the Sierra's suspension currently. The L was quite a bit heavier than my truck now which could have made a difference in ride quality.

5.3 racer 16 - the top speed is a aerodynamically limited 147 mph. there is no hard rev limitor or top speed limitor on these trucks (god that rocks). i have run 140 and still pulling hard in mine. scarry for a breadbox to do that lol.

X-Factor - stock Ls are boring. it is a futile comparison. like the ls1 fbodys comparing themselves with 03/04 Cobras. no one (cobra/L) stays stock long. esp when it is so easy to mod and the gains are tremendous. stock is just that, stock. a real Lightning enthusiast doesnt stay stock for long. 8 psi is just the begining. life begins at 15 psi and 1.8 60' times on stock F1 tires.

I agree, its too easy not to have a 12 sec Lightning...spend a few hours putting on a chip/filter/pulley. Although having experienced both sides, theres more pride and appreciation in taking a stock GM 15 second work truck and making it a 13-11 second sport truck. Again, just my opinion :)

Good info to know,I just got a service bulletin from SVT to have a detailed inspection on tie rod "free play", "stud lash" and seal inspection. I'm going to call now to schedule that to be done. THANKS
