Default A wierd smell coming from vents in wifes car

This has nothing to do with my truck but I am hoping that you guys can help. My wife complains about smelling gas fumes from the a/c vents in her car. She drives an Oldsmobile Alero with a 4cylinder. I have ridden with her on occasions and I don't smell it. She usually says it smells its worst in the mornings on cold starts but in the afternoons it isn't as bad. The smell tends to go away but comes back while driving. I have asked this on some forum boards that pertain to this vehicle and those guys don't really know. I hope that you guys can help me out. Thanks

It could be antifreeze she is smelling from a leaking heater core. Do you have to add water to the radiator?

ditto do a pressure test on it and it will tell you if you have a leak.

She does want an SUV but we can't afford another large payment at this time. Thanks of the suggestion though.

I haven't had to add water at all. Wouldn't the car overheat if it needed water? The car always stays within the temp range it is suppose to. Where is the heater core located? Is it inside the car or is it under the hood?

Do I do that myself or do I need to take the car in to a shop to have that done?

If you leaked very much you would over heat, your coolant recovery tank would supply water for a while untill it got low. It is possible it could be freon she is smelling from a leak in the evaporator. Your heater core should be inside on the passenger side under the glove box, usually hard to get to. You should be able to borrow a pressure tester from Auto Zone to pump up you coolant system to see if it holds pressure.

My girlfriend has that car....

I noticed it has a good ability to pick up other peoples exhaust and pump it into the passenger compartment when you're sitting in traffic. It even does it to it's own exhaust when iding warming up, or sitting at a long traffic light...

Yup! My wife says it smells like gasoline. I don't know where that could be coming from because I have checked for leaks and found nothing.
